Top 10 TV Episodes of 2010

Before I start my list, let’s get this out of the way: I’m behind on FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS and BREAKING BAD. And I’ve never seen MAD MEN. I completely understand that they are all amazing shows and have had some phenomenal episodes this past season, but I haven’t seen them. I promise to try and catch up soon.

With that being said, television has really given us some gems this year, hasn’t it? Several shows gave us their best episodes yet, whether they were unconventional, game-changing, just starting off or ending their journeys.

Everyone has different definitions of what makes an episode great, so this is my admittedly biased list of the 10 best episodes of 2010, listed in alphabetical order by series…

DAVID BOREANAZ & EMILY DESCHANEL: THE FORMULA TO BONES’ SUCCESS

The FOX series, Bones, has been a mainstay for the network. Bones is now in its sixth season, and the series seems to be getting better and better each year. The show is not only a success in the USA, but is popular all over the world. Much of the shows success can undoubtedly be attributed to its main stars, Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz, who have great chemistry.
We caught up with Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz, who told us why they think Bones is a worldwide success. (Click on the media bar below to hear Emily Deschanel & David Boreanaz)

27. Bones hit the century mark

Bones went all out for its 100th episode: Series star David Boreanaz directed it, Eric Millegan returned to play intern Zach Addy, viewers got a glimpse at the turbulent beginnings of Booth and Brennan's relationship, and—most momentously—Brennan rejected Booth in one of the most heartbreaking scenes of the year.

Asian Art Sets the Scene on 'Bones'

A budget-conscious set that looks like a million dollars

For the hit Fox television show Bones, now in its sixth season, production designer Michael Mayer and set decorator Kim Wannop have created some of the most visually stunning living spaces to be seen on the small screen.

Set in Washington, D.C., but shot in Los Angeles, the show follows the crime-solving adventures of world-famous forensic anthropologist and mystery writer Dr. Temperance Brennan (played by Emily Deschanel) and her partner, FBI special agent Seeley Booth (played by David Boreanaz). To create Brennan’s home, Mayer and Wannop turned to Asia for a look that is sophisticated, elegant, and serene.

Wetpaint Exclusive! Emily Deschanel on Brennan's Confession and the Bones Love Triangle

What's the latest skinny on Bones star Emily Deschanel? Wetpaint gets up to speed on where the actress stands after six seasons as the socially impaired forensic anthropologist Temperance "Bones" Brennan.

On what she still loves about playing Brennan:
"I think that Brennan has (a) become a lot more open over the years, and you get to see her kind of dorky, quirky side at times, which is fun. I hang on to those moments and try to incorporate things like that in every episode. My favorite things about people in general is that they have contradictions. Brennan is no exception to that rule. I love exploring the contradictions of her character and all of that."...

Bones' Katheryn Winnick (aka Hannah): Bombshell, Black Belt, All-Around Badass

As Hannah Burley, Katheryn Winnick is the gal we love to hate on Bones. But in real life, she's bonded with the other actors on the series, especially Emily Deschanel. In an interview with Premier Guide Miami’s Daedriam McNaughton, Katheryn acknowledged that while it was a little intimidating coming to the Bones set on her first day, Emily and David Boreanaz were "fantastic, so warm and friendly."

But what about the drama between her character and Brennan? “I feel like Brennan’s character can’t help but feel a little bit of tension of who’s this new girl,” explained Katheryn. “I think she said she doesn’t even know if she is at all jealous... It will be interesting to see how the story and the arc plays out, if she discovers something within herself. … But, no, I don’t think there’s a cat fight.”

Bones Guest Stars We'd Like to See

Bones has had some amazing guest stars over the years, but there are a few more folks that we'd love to see make an appearance. Here are our choices for coveted guest stars, along with a suggestion or two on what kind of story they could bring to the show. Hear that, Hart Hanson?

Nathan Fillion
Nathan has that Joss Whedon/Buffy the Vampire Slayer connection (he played Caleb, the priest on the show) and it would be great to see him as a slick con man who gives Booth a run for his money.

Mary Jo Deschanel

Emily's mom is an actress, and has appeared on Law & Order, Twin Peaks, and House, among other shows. Since Emily's sister Zooey has made a guest appearance and her cinematographer dad Caleb directed an episode, it seems only fitting to bring mom on as well. She could be a long-lost aunt of Brennan's.

TV Fanatic Mid-Season Report Card: Bones

With our favorite prime time shows on hiatus, TVF is taking a look back at some buzzed-about programs and grading their performance this fall, with a look toward 2011.

Yesterday, we examined Brothers & Sisters. This morning: Bones.

Best episode: For humor, the Jersey Shore-themed "The Maggots in the Meathead." For drama, "The Doctor in the Photo." This dark, compelling episode featuring an introspective Brennan contrasted starkly from last season's uplifting Christmas episode.

Just the same, it likely marked a pivotal moment for Temperance. Her declaration will resonate with Booth. Sad as it was, it could signal the brightest days yet up ahead.

'Bones' Fan Columnist: What to Expect in the Second Half of Season 6

Hello, Bones fans! So I don't know about you, but I'm personally still trying to get over the heartbreak and emotional damage that came with last week's mid-season finale. I mean, really Booth? Really Bones writers?

I don't even think we can use the excuse of trying to be true to the characters anymore because I think we can all agree that the Booth we have all known and loved for years now is not the same guy anymore, so my question is: Where do we go from here?

What can we expect from the second half of the season, and how do we get back to the old Bones? Well, of course I don't have all the answers to these questions, but I was able to gather up a few interesting tidbits for you guys to think about over the break. Check it out!

How Much Do the Bones Actors Make?

It has to be a whole lot of fun working on Bones. You get to play with creepy, slimy things, hang out in the Royal Diner when filming scenes, and probably make a good chunk of change to boot. Who wouldn't want to be on this show?

So, how much do these lucky actors make? The first thing you need to consider is that they are on a popular show. The slow economy has hit the television world much the same as it has the rest of the country, so even actors on popular TV shows aren't making what they were "back in the day." Of course, that doesn't mean they aren't doing well!

15 Things to Do While You're Waiting for Bones to Return

We only have a few weeks until the next Bones episode, but even that is too long for us. We need to see what happens with Booth and Brennan now that she's admitted her mistake in letting him go. And how will we sleep at night wondering which character may get taken out by a sniper?

Here are 15 ways to keep our minds occupied until our favorite crime-solving show returns with a bang on January 20:

15. Get your clay beads and clasps out and try making a few earrings like the ones Temperance Brennan wears. Give yourself double points if you can make a necklace to match.

10 Things You Didn't Know About Bones' Emily Deschanel

You probably know a few things about Emily Deschanel, like the fact that her sister, Zooey, is also an actress. But did you know that she loves a certain comic book character, is about to star in a new movie, and is best friends with one of her Bones co-stars? No? Well read on!

1. She's a newlywed.
Emily married actor/writer David Hornsby (cousin of singer Bruce Hornsby) in September 2010. According to People, it was a "quiet evening ceremony," and yes, David Boreanaz was there to cheer her on. Emily, like her fictional counterpart, wore beautiful drop earrings for the ceremony. Unlike Bones's staple jewelry, Emily's wore 10-carat diamonds.

Deconstructing BONES: When Television Becomes Art-Worthy and Makes Us Want to Weep With Joy

In a recent episode of BONES entitled “The Doctor in the Photo” (written by Carla Kettner), one particular line stood out and resonated. It was when Dr. Gadh quoted, “I will show you fear in a handful of dust” (which is a line from the famous T.S. Eliot poem: “The Waste Land: The Burial of the Dead”). When Dr. Dadh explained, “We do not actually fear death — we fear that no one will notice our absence — that we will disappear without a trace,” it echoed just as loudly.

It is a rare and magnificent feat when television is written with this kind of literary intensity. When it is, we pick up our ears in disbelief. For suddenly, whatever we are watching is no longer just a television show, it has risen to the level of art...

Top 5 Ickiest Moments of Bones Season 6 (So Far)

Bones is well-known for featuring some of the grossest scenes on TV, which makes sense since it is a show about a forensic pathologist. But a few moments have probably made you wince more than others. Here are some of the ickiest moments of Season 6... so far.

5. It's called Bones for a reason (Episode 6,"The Shallow in The Deep")
Brennan pounds on Booth's door to wake him up. As Booth rises, his own bones, every last one of them, crack and snap and pop. Disgusting! Even worse, Booth and Bones then drive from his apartment to Sweets's office, where they walk in on Sweets and Daisy doing it on the couch. Bones - Our Favorite Christmas Moments

'Tis the season to solve crime and be jolly! Our favorite Bones characters always manage to spread the Christmas cheer, regardless of what's going on in the lab. There’s no holiday episode this year (boo!), so here are a few of our favorite moments from Bones’ Christmas past.

A Very Quarantined Christmas
In Season 1, Episode 9, "The Man in the Fallout Shelter," Zack Addy cuts into some bones and possibly releases coccidioidomycosis, a biological decontaminant that causes Valley Fever, a disease that is pretty much the worst flu you could ever get. Quarantined until the Powers That Be can figure out if the threat is real or not, the entire team is forced to sit out Christmas in the lab. Merry Xmas, squints!...

Spoiler: Booth Confronts a Sniper, Gets Closer to Bones

Brennan just realized her mistake in not giving Booth a chance, and Booth is now with Hannah but has kept all these secrets from her. We're dying here, Bones producers! Will our favorite forensic anthropologist and FBI agent ever get together?

Will Hannah Stick Around on Bones?

Ever since Hannah arrived on the scene, things have been different between Brennan and Booth. Hannah represents a door that was once slightly ajar and is now slammed shut. There is no way our favorite will-they-won’t-they couple are getting together as long as the intrepid reporter is around, as evidenced by events in Season 6, Episode 9, "The Doctor in the Photo." As Booth was quick to point out, Hannah "is not a consolation prize." Meaning that Booth didn't just hook up with Hannah because he couldn't have Brennan. (That's his story, at least.)...

Mega Buzz: Will Bones' Sniper Bring Booth and Brennan Together?

Bones is killing me! Please tell me Booth will wise up and choose Brennan in the new year. — Linda
ADAM:
Well, he may have other things on his mind: Executive producer Stephen Nathan tells me that an upcoming storyline about a sniper is going to turn Booth's world upside down. "Booth is forced to confront the life that he led [as a sniper in the Army] when he sees a guy who's perverted the profession," he says. "The need Booth has to bring this guy to justice is going to hang over us for the rest of the year." But in the meantime, Booth will look to Temperance to be his rock. "Whatever his relationship with Hannah, Brennan is always the closest person in his life," Nathan says. "The sniper will affect Booth and Brennan in a very profound way."

She is so incredibly entertaining that it doesn’t even matter what comes out of her mouth, whether it makes sense or not, or if it’s even remotely on topic. Matt's TV Week in Review: Soulmates

Since I'm too much in the holiday spirit to dwell on the cancellation of Terriers right off the bat, let's start this week's overview with a look at some of our favorite TV soulmates, comic and otherwise.

Thursday night, you could hardly avoid them. The most provocative being an unusually pensive re-examination of the Bones-Booth dynamic on Bones. This artful hour is a true showcase for Emily Deschanel, as Bones sees an unflattering version of herself in this week's skeletal victim, discovered with a tree growing through her. The vic is a doc, a surgeon who lives for work and torments her interns, seen by peers as having no passion, no life, no one to miss her or maybe even mourn her. "How could someone that important just disappear so quietly?" says one of the team. ...

Spoiler Alert! Emily Deschanel Teases Thursday’s Brennan-centric BONES

Wondering just how big of an episode this upcoming Thursday’s Brennan-centric instalment of BONES is? So big that we just got off of a conference call with her portrayer, the wonderfully well spoken Emily Deschanel, in which she kindly talked about the epsisode, her take on Hannah and what BONES fans have to look forward to in the coming months. Needless to say, spoilerphobes, you have been warned.

1: It’s a game-changer!
Despite the general consensus that the phrase “game-changer” is in fact one of the most overused terms in the history of the medium, Thursday’s episode — in which the murder of a prominent surgeon has Brennan re-evaluating her life as a result of how much in common she has with the victim — is just that. “Brennan starts, as a lot of people in life do, to wonder… am I working my whole life away, not spending time with the people who are important, not taking a chances,” explained Deschanel. “If I died tomorrow would I be happy with my life as it is, right now?”

USA Today: Hannah Hate-Fest

Pasadena, CA: Love your comments. Very insightful. You’ve said that the character of Hannah will be leaving ‘Bones’ soon but ALL of the recent interviews with producers and actors have said just the opposite, that her departure is undecided and seems to be dragging on through the entire season. This plot has impacted the main characters for the worse, sidelined the secondary characters and sucked all of the air out of the procedural part of the show. Ratings were down last week. How long can this continue before the show crashes and burns and what do you think the move to 9:00 after ‘American Idol’ will mean for ‘Bones’?

Robert Bianco:
What will moving behind "Idol" mean to "Bones?" More viewers on the plus side, and higher expectations on the minus. As for Hannah, in this economy, I hate to wish unemployment on anyone - but I hate Hannah and I pray we get a Hannah-free show as a Christmas gift. As for what you've heard about her staying - all I can say is I was told she isn't. But sometimes plans change, and sometimes, hard is this may be to believe, I'm told what people think I want to hear. So we'll see.

USA Today Talks Bones

Dublin, Georgia: Hey Robert, I look forward to your "Critic's Corner" every week. Since I agree with most of your reviews, I wanted to ask a question about Bones. Is it just me, or has Bones become a so-so show? They have shifted the script away from the characters of Booth and Bones too much. Where is the Chemistry? Where is the show I feel in love with? If it doesn't improve, It will be a show that will be deleted from my TIVO. What do you think?

Robert Bianco: I wouldn't go as far as "so-so" - not when there are so many shows on TV where "so-so" would be a major step up - but I do share some of your disappointment, Dublin. The attempt to introduce a competing love interest for Booth has failed miserably: the character is ridiculous, the actors lack chemistry, and the relationship is too badly written to play as anything but "filler." It takes time away from Booth and Bones and, worse, it takes time away from the central mystery plots - which haven't been as good this year as they need to be to support all the banter. Still, here's the bright side: Odds are very good that the new girl is not long for this world. That may not immediately fix the show, but it should help.

‘Bones’ bolstered by Kathy Reichs, David Boreanaz fans, says Emily Deschanel

How long can “Bones” go on?

Emily Deschanel, who plays Dr. Temperance Brennan on the Fox drama, says she doesn’t know, and it’s out of her control as an actor anyway.

“I have a contract for eight seasons,” she said in a conference call today with reporters. “I can’t believe we’ve been here six seasons. … There are so many wonderful shows that get canceled in the first season.”

Emily Deschanel reveals a very personal episode of “Bones”

Emily Deschanel has a very intense episode of Bones coming up. In “The Doctor in the Photo,” airing Thursday December 9 at 8, Brennan (Deschanel) analyzes the body of a surgeon. Her investigation shows a lot of parallels between the deceased and herself, including career habits, relationships or lack thereof. The case makes Brennan reflect on her life in an uncharacteristically emotional episode. Deschanel spoke with the media in a conference call to discuss next week’s show, with very minor spoilers.

Q: How did it feel to portray Brennan so vulnerably?

Conference Call Tweets: Emily Deschanel

"Next episode is very personal to Brennan. She's very vulnerable..confronts her mortality. I'm in every scene.

I love playing this character, she is so different from me. But sometimes I see some of myself in Brennan.

"In the next episode the scene w/David in the car I was expected to cry-I kinda dread those scenes."

"Brennan realizes she make a mistake with Booth last year. This episode/case helps her take risks in her life"

"Brennan wants Booth to be happy, she is conflicted about his relationship with Hananh... that gets more serious.

The relationship between Hannah and Brennan becomes strained when Brennan reveals her feelings for Booth"

"I love that we have such loyal fans. I have a contract for 8 seasons, I'm so lucky to be doing this great show."

"We have upcoming episodes about BMX Bikers, Polygamy and David directs an action-packed episode about a sniper."

"Brennan is clueless about reading peoples emotions, that surprises me. I love that she is growing as a person."

"After this very emotional upcoming episode it was nice to go back to a more typical Bones episode"

"It's been reported I was directing "The Wedding Planner" episode but I am not. Will do one later in season."

Emily said not disappointed postpone directing #Bones. Doesn't have to prep now-more time to spend w/ family over holidays.

EW Scoop: The Doctor in the Photo

SIDE DISHES:

@NewarkCrimeTV asks: Any scoop on Castle, Criminal Minds, NCIS or Bones? (I’m not picky…)
I’ll take Bones for $500, Newark. In the Dec. 9 episode, “The Doctor in the Photo,” Brennan will make a shocking move that honestly might leave you in tears. I can’t say much more, but I can leave you with an equation: Heroism in “Two Bodies in the Lab” – real danger + tear-worthiness of last 20 minutes of “The Parts in the Sum of the Whole” + 1/2 of the weirdness in “The End in the Beginning” + Veronica Mars mini-reunion (Francis Capra and Enrico Colantoni!) = “The Doctor in the Photo”
