Guest starring on a show that's been around for 11 seasons might be intimidating for some actors, but for Kim Raver, who's joined more than one series several years in (Grey's Anatomy and 24), it's old hat. Raver pops in for Bones' two-part season opener as icy FBI agent Grace Miller, who has been tapped to help solve a special case: the disappearance of ex-FBI agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz).

The role is a departure from Raver's last TV gig as Audrey Boudreau on 24: Live Another Day. "Audrey was strong, but she still had to acquiesce to other people," Raver says. Not Grace. While Booth's wife, Temperance Brennan (Emily Deschanel), and former partner James Aubrey (John Boyd) are sure Booth was taken against his will, Grace has a different idea. "She's concerned that Both is actually a suspect (and not a victim), and she comes in and very strongly states her opinion," Raver says. Naturally, Brennan doesn't take kindly to the insinuation, and the two soon butt heads. "I know, not the amazing, perfect Booth, right?" Raver says with a laugh. "But Grace is concerned." She has reason to be. The gambling addict recently relapsed and has more than once gone rogue.

Grace isn't just around to antagonize Brennan, though. "There are some twists and turns that eventually warm Grace up, " Raver teases. And those turns might explain why she in particular is on this case. The one bummer for Raver is that she won't be around to see Booth's homecoming. "I didn't get to work with David," she laments. But working with Deschanel was treat enough. "I love that her character is this super intelligent, great woman." -Oriana Schwindt

Emily Deschanel's smart and sexy vibe creates chemistry from anthropology

Emily Deschanel won the lead role on Bones by going toe-to-toe with costar David Boreanaz -- literally.

Brought in at the eleventh hour, Deschanel was reading with Boreanaz when he suddenly moved toward her. "Ninety percent of actors would take a step back, but she stepped into him," says executive producer Hart Hanson."That's the key to chemistry. They're equal."

As the coolly methodical forensic anthropologist and novelist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan, Deschanel has made the study of skeletal remains a reason for eight million viewers to seek out the investigative drama. That, and the rumbling sexual tension between Bones and Seeley Booth (Boreanaz), a special agent from the FBI's Homicidal Investigation Unit.

This week, Bones and Booth travel to California to investigate the body parts of a woman found near Los Angeles International Airport. The victim's extensive plastic surgery makes the probe more perplexing. Actor-director Penny Marshall, who made her bones on Laverne & Shirley, has a cameo. 

"I've never done anything this intense before," Deschanel says of her first crack at episodic TV. "I'm in almost every scene and working every day."

Most weekends, she rehearses with Boreanaz. "From the minute I met with him, it just felt right," says Deschanel of the actor who, cut his teeth on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. "We take our work seriously, but we have fun with it," she says. "We trust each other and know each other's secrets."

(Gossipmongers, take note: Boreanaz is married to actress Jaime Bergman, and Deschanel considers their 3-year-old son, Jaden Rayne, her "boyfriend.")

A lithe and lighthearted theater graduate of Boston University, Deschanel, 28, grew up in a home where drama was taken seriously. Her father, Caleb, is a celebrated cinematographer whose work includes "The Passion of the Christ." Her sister Zooey ("Almost Famous") is a screen actress. Deschanel delights in her character's prickly presence and respects her dedication to foraging for the truth. "There's a difference between being nice and being good," she says. "Brennan isn't always nice, but she is always good."

Her work has required Deschanel to bone up on human anatomy. "Before shooting technical scenes, Eric Millegan, who plays my assistant, and I will be singing show tunes or quoting our favorite comedy movies," she says. "Then suddenly I'm saying lines like 'The scapula is shattered in many places.'"

"At the beginning it was so hard," she says. "I learned about bones in school a long time ago, and now I'm learning them all over again."

According to executive producer Hanson, Deschanel Demonstrated right from her audition that she had the will and winning way needed to bring Bones to life.

"We needed three things," recalls Hanson. "Someone who was sexy, smart and funny. No one had all three, then in she came. Within five minutes we were doing handsprings because she had all those things -- and more."

When we last saw forensic anthropologist Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and her FBI-agent husband, Booth (David Boreanaz), they were saying goodbye to their jobs and friends to make a fresh start - possibly for good. The episode was intended to double as a series finale, since the show's renewal came down to teh wire. Now new co-showrunner Michael Peterson has to figure out how to bring Booth and Brennan back. "The theme that we're exploring is you can't escape fate," says Peterson. Season 11 picks up six months later when a major murder will lure the couple back into the fold. Says Deschanel, "As much as the death and violence and murder an get to somebody, it really seems like this is kind of their purpose in life." And there's more than existential crisis in store. A two-part crossover between the realistic Bones and otherworldly Sleepy Hollow will air Oct. 29. "Our hour will definitely be explained by science, and theirs will take that much more fantastical point of view," Peterson says, adding that both will center on the undead. Dozens of men donning fedoras and ladies adorned in poodle skirts mill about a fake street on Fox's Century City back lot, which has been transformed into a carefree and colorful 1950s Los Angeles of Bones' 200th episode. Suddenly, a bloodcurdling scream pierces the joyous scene as a body falls to the ground, a knife protruding from its back. "That puts a wrinkle in the pants," says David Boreanaz's Seeley Booth as he slides from the passenger seat of a vintage Chevrolet convertible driven by Emily Deschanel's Temperance Brennan, who jerks the car into gear, narrowly avoiding a camera's dollytrack. Boreanaz, who is also directing the episode, calls "cut" and gives his costar a nervous smile.
"I don't think he trusted I would be able to drive it," says Deschanel with a laugh between takes. "And David, being the kind, generous director he is, was trying to give me tips. but I did it perfectly!"
That pursuit of perfection is apparent as cast and crew shoot one of the most daring, detailed hours in the show's 10th run. Teh episode presents an alternate reality where the members of hte Jeffersonian Institute team have been reimagined as the subjects of a classic caper with slight changes to their characters. Here, FBI agent Booth is a charismatic Cary Grant-like jewel thief, while forensic anthropologist Brennan is an intrepid LAPD detective facing sexism on the force. After Booth is framed for murder, the two partner up to clear his name and track down the real killer. The suspended investigation includes tributes to old school Hollywood movies - including Easter-egg nods to director Alfred Hitchcock.
"But I don't want to classify this as completely Hitcockian," says Boreanaz. "I didn't watch his films to get ready to direct the episode. I wanted to maintain my own sense of style - in terms of what I wanted to do with the frames and the composition - but allowed that all to come together in 1950s Technicolor."
"On many shows, when one of the stars directs, sometimes it can be an indulgence," says executive producer Stephen Nathan, who also wrote the episode. "With David, it's exactly the opposite. And for this one, he should get a Purple Heart, because he's basically in every scene and he's directing the most complicated episode this show has ever done."
Aside from the costume and makeup challenges, the crew had to overhaul the show's sets to evoke the era, which meant transforming Booth and Brennan's modern East Coast love nest into a retro loft overlooking the Hollywood Hills. And for the episode's North by Northwest-inspired climax, producers brought in an actual Douglas DC-3 airplane and constructed a fully moveable mock-up of the interior, which roughed up some of the actors. "I worked my knees pretty hard from being in the plane's fuselage going left and right, running on the runway, and some dancing sequences," Boreanaz says. "There was a lot that we struggled with and it took much longer than a regular Bones episode." (This installment took 12 days to shoot versus the usual nine.)
Boreanaz and the rest of the cast are well aware that a 200th episode is no regular feat. In the history of Fox, only four other dramas have reached that number: The X Files, Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, and 24. And when Bones reaches No. 206 later this season, coincidentally, the number of bones in the human body - it will be the longest running drama ever at the studio that produces it, 20th Century Fox Television. "The show still feels creatively vibrant, and it really all starts with characters," says Gary Newman, co-chairman and CEO of Fox Television Group. "You feel actual suspense and stakes in the stories, and Booth and Brennan are just incredibly interesting, complex and funny characters."
The success of the show - which has been translated into 45 languages and airs on six continents - has always hinged on teh chemistry between Boreanaz and Deschanel, which started as a classic "Will they or won't they?" pairing and evolved into a real relationship, marriage, and parenthood. "The first time I did a scene with David and Emily, I saw them doing their thing as they solved a crime and I was like, 'Oh!' says John Boyd, who joined the cast this season as Booth's new protege, FBI agent James Aubrey. "What keeps us going is this magic thing they have."
But how long can Bones realistically keep going? The addition of Boyd and the unexpected death of fan favorite Dr. Lance Sweets (John Francis Daley) in the season premiere have given the show a creative boost and Nathan admits that the potential for fresh storylines is stronger than ever. "We don't see any natural end to it right now," Nathan says. "It will have an end, because everything does, but at this point there seems to be a lot more life than death.
