Bones showrunner promises a focus on Booth and Brennan in Season 11

If you’re one of the many Bones fans that can’t get enough of Booth (David Boreanax) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) then rest easy, because new co-showrunner Michael Peterson says the main couple is “definitely the focus coming into the season.” On a call with reporters on Wednesday, Peterson said the show’s “focus is 100% to have as much time as possible with Booth and Brennan,” in Season 11. After all, “that is the heart of the show,” he added before promising that “we will challenge ourselves to give as much screen time as possible,” to Bones central couple this year...

(Scan, Transcript of Scan) EW Fall Issue 2015

Bones
Season 11 8 PM FOX

When we last saw forensic anthropologist Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and her FBI-agent husband, Booth (David Boreanaz), they were saying goodbye to their jobs and friends to make a fresh start - possibly for good. The episode was intended to double as a series finale, since the show's renewal came down to teh wire. Now new co-showrunner Michael Peterson has to figure out how to bring Booth and Brennan back. "The theme that we're exploring is you can't escape fate," says Peterson. Season 11 picks up six months later when a major murder will lure the couple back into the fold. Says Deschanel, "As much as the death and violence and murder an get to somebody, it really seems like this is kind of their purpose in life." And there's more than existential crisis in store. A two-part crossover between the realistic Bones and otherworldly Sleepy Hollow will air Oct. 29. "Our hour will definitely be explained by science, and theirs will take that much more fantastical point of view," Peterson says, adding that both will center on the undead. Brennan, time to suspend your disbelief. OCT. 1

Ask Ausiello: September 4

Question: Anything you can give us about Booth and Brennan’s new baby on Bones? Please? —Debora
Ausiello: It’s a boy. He will already be several months old when the new season starts. And his name… will have meaning. Also, don’t expect Bones to morph into Parenthood now that Booth and Brennan have two kids together. “It’s not the baby show, it’s the Bones show,” exec producer Michael Peterson tells TVLine. “We’re trying to find the perfect balance, where we show the kids and [establish that] Booth and Brennan are great parents [without] making it solely about the children.”
Question: Any word if Booth’s son Parker will make another appearance this season? —Phoebe
Ausiello: As a matter of fact, yes! “We definitely will be seeing him,” Peterson reveals of Booth’s MIA kid from another mother. “We’re working on a storyline right now that will have him return.”

When are we going to see Booth and Brennan back at the Jeffersonian on Bones? — Kellen
Not immediately. As I previously mentioned, the show picks up roughly six months after their exit and they’ve both moved on with their lives. “Booth is teaching at Quantico, so he’s left the old life behind,” new showrunner Michael Peterson tells me.  “Besides just giving birth to a child, Brennan never has trouble filling up her time. She’s written books, she’s done multiple projects. She’s more in between than Booth. She’s diversified herself into many projects, so she hasn’t quite landed on the one.”

Why the heck is Booth missing when Bones returns? — Raina
Raise your hand if you’re freaking out. Same. Here’s what I know: The premiere picks up six months after Booth and Brennan bid farewell to the Jeffersonian. “It’s a very personal reason,” new showrunner Michael Peterson tells me of Booth’s disappearance. “It’s a family reason. He gets involved in something that’s very close to home and is probably the only thing that would pull him away from the tranquil life that he was leading up until that moment.”

(Interview) 'Bones' Boss on the Jeffersonian Team Shake-Up and Brennan's "New Journey"

There’s still one episode of Bones left this season, but the penultimate hour signaled big changes ahead for the Jeffersonian team as the show heads into Season 11.
Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) and Angela (Michaela Conlin) are taking official steps to moving to Paris, including handing in their notice to Brennan (Emily Deschanel). At the same time, Brennan is becoming much more reliant on her gut instincts and emotions to deal with Booth’s (David Boreanaz) gambling addiction — a change that’s been ten years in the making.
Bones showrunner Stephen Nathan spoke to The Hollywood Reporter about the changes happening to the team and why the final two episodes of the season have such an eerie "goodbye" feeling...

Ask Matt: Bones Departures, June 4th

Question: Everything I read about Bones right now is focused on Booth and Brennan and how long their separation will last. Personally, I'm more interested in the other couple on the show: Hodgins and Angela! Are they really going to move to France? Are the two leaving the show? What do you know? — Kelly
Matt Roush: This is as good a time as any as we re-establish this column on the TV Insider site to remind everyone that this is not a spoiler column. I'm happy to comment on what has already happened on a show (or has been widely reported), but I'm not going to spoil, speculate or tease too heavily about what's to come. I will tell you I've seen this week's episode of Bones, which advances this particular subplot—which clearly seems to have been spoiled elsewhere (I don't seek out such things)—about Hodgins and Angela and their romantic notions of Paris. Several characters make note during the hour, in a very meta way, that they never thought they'd be doing this job so long.
But here's how Fox describes next week's storyline for the June 11 season finale: "Angela is skeptical about her and Hodgins' decision to move to Paris [maybe that's where the spoiler came from? Good move, Fox!], and Brennan and Booth contemplate options outside of the Jeffersonian and FBI." All of which sounds to me like standard-issue end-of-season teases, in this case perhaps amplified by the fact that the producers may not have known at the time of production whether this was in fact the end of the series. (The finale's episode title just changed from "The End in the End" to "The Next in the Last," which sounds a lot less final to me.) So basically, since I don't know anything for sure—and if I did, I wouldn't tell—I'd assume if you don't hear anything different, or unless the actors start giving exit interviews, that everyone will be sticking around for a while longer. Although they may be leaving some of that up in the air for cliffhanger purposes.

Question: I am glad I found you on Twitter and your column again. My question is about showrunners. I have always been a big Bones fan and now I see that they are changing show-runners again. I have to admit I wasn't as crazy about the past few seasons as previous ones, but I feel that may also be due to the age of the franchise. So, I was wondering how big of an effect does the showrunner have. Does he or she set the overall tone of the show, hire their own writers, dictate general character development? I do miss Hart Hanson. I was surprised about the change in the feel of the show since Stephen Nathan has always been a part of the show. — Tina
Matt Roush: Welcome to TV Insider and thanks for the question. I'll admit I don't watch this kind of show with the sort of constant attention that would allow me to make this kind of judgment. But it's a fact that, no matter who's in charge, it's harder to keep any series feeling fresh when it hits the decade mark, and a sense of franchise fatigue is bound to set in. The need to keep shaking things up, as in Booth's gambling addiction causing a (presumably) temporary separation in their marriage this season, will strike many as contrived and annoying, and that's fair. Your bigger question is harder to answer. As you noted, Stephen Nathan has always been part of the show, so his taking over the running of Bones was more an evolution than revolution.

Ask Ausiello: June 4th

Question: Do you have any scoop on Bones? It’s been such a dark season for the show, so there has to be some light at the end of the tunnel that would potentially set up a somewhat happier 11th season, right…? —Cassidy
Ausiello: Yes, things have gotten quite cloudy over the Jeffersonian — and this week’s episode throws a few more curveballs at beleaguered Booth and Bones, especially when one decides not to invite the other to an important event. The looming question becomes: Can Temp set aside her reliance on facts and instead let her heart lead? As for a “somewhat happier” Season 11, you’re much more likely to find yourself asking after the finale, “How can there be any Season 11?”

Bones Mega Buzz: How Long Will Booth and Brennan Be Kept Apart?

Bones fans have had only one thought since Brennan kicked Booth out of the house after his gambling relapse: When will Booth be welcomed back home?
On Thursday's episode (8/7c, Fox), things are looking up as Booth (David Boreanaz) nears his 30-days-sober milestone. But just as the ice begins to thaw, Brennan (Emily Deschanel) learns that Booth didn't invite her to celebrate the occasion with him. Will this latest blow derail the couple's progress?...
