The Most Shocking Deaths of the 2014-2015 TV Season

The 2014-2015 TV season has finally wrapped up, though there are a few shows still delivering us fresh new episodes. For example, the season finale of the FOX drama Bones will not take place until June 11, and the network’s reality series Hell’s Kitchen will air its last episode of the season two days earlier on June 9.  Like all of the television seasons prior to this one, there was a lot of shocking twists and turns on some of our favorite series.  However, many of the most outrageous of storylines involved some our most beloved TV show characters perishes.  While some series will wait until the final few episodes to say goodbye to these characters, other shows killed off their stars at the very beginning of the season back in September. Here is a look at some of the most memorable deaths of the 2014-2015 TV season...

John Francis Daley Is 'Bones' Greatest Victory, Because You Can Never Have Too Much Sweets

How’s your day been so far? Kinda meh, right? Well, that’s probably because you haven’t spent any time thinking about Bones’ resident cutie, John Francis Daley, yet today. Because, let me tell you, that’s a day-peaker if ever there was one. So much so that it drove me to invent the phrase “day-peaker.” Seriously, though, he’s a pretty impressive guy. He got his start on Freaks and Geeks with the likes of Jason Segel and James Franco, he wrote the screenplay and story, respectively, for both Horrible Bosses films, and he’s easily the best thing to ever come out of Bones. If that’s not too bold to say.

I’ll spare you all of the Bones/boning jokes, because I don’t particularly want to alienate any of my readers right of the bat. But, just know that there are plenty of jokes re: boning John Francis Daley rattling around in my brain. Apologies to his wife (except NO APOLOGIES, NEVER SURRENDER). Seriously though, for those of you who aren’t familiar with the show, his character is (well, spoiler alertwas) the best. Dr. Lance Sweets was an FBI agent and psychologist, and his character brought a more human dimension to the show. He was by far the most likable person on screen at any given moment. That’s because he’s just the best on his own. In fact, here are nine reasons JFD is the greatest...

EW Spoiler Room: March 6

Anything for Booth and Brennan? Bones being on its winter hiatus is a killer. — Emma
The show’s return coincides with what would’ve been Sweets’ birthday, which dredges up old wounds. But with Avalon (Cyndi Lauper) returning to assist with the case of a dead fortune teller, the psychic will find a way to bring Booth and Brennan some closure.

Matt's Inside LIne: Jan 23

Can we expect any Hodgins and Angela storylines — together or separately — in the second half of the current Bones season? –Rachel
“Hodgins and Angela have something exciting happen to them – which is like the worst, most vague spoiler ever,” Michaela Conlin told me, laughing. Perhaps T.J. Thyne happened to elaborate? Previewing Cyndi Lauper’s next appearance on the show, he said, “Avalon ‘sees’ Sweets, which pisses Hodgins off, so Hodgins and Avalon go at it, with Angela caught in the middle. And that gets pretty intense!” (On a presumably lighter note, Conlin also teased an episode involving a poker game.)

Ask Ausiello: November 18

Question: Any scoop on this Thursday’s Bones episode, the one where Daisy gives birth? I’ve already seen a photo of Booth holding Sweets Jr. (*sobs*) —Emma
Ausiello: The delivery won’t be as dour as you might expect, given the circumstances. “Maybe it was supposed to be dramatic, but I don’t think I’m capable of that,” Carla Gallo previews with a chuckle. “I feel like to do a dramatic birth is too upsetting for anyone to watch.” That said, Sweets’ presence — or lack thereof — “looms large” in the hospital room, she promises.

On the set of The Big Bang Theory
Laura Spencer is a pro at playing two characters at once. Catch her on Thursdays both on The Big Bang Theory as Raj’s love interest and on Bones, opposite Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz. Here, we chat with the actress about her two big breaks, dealing with zombies on a Sprint commercial (yes, that’s her), and her “love” for Skittles...

‘Bones’ (Season 10): Life Without Sweets

It was less than a month ago now that Bones fans tuned into the debut of the Fox series’ tenth season. It was finally time for us to see what happened to Booth and Bones in the aftermath of the crazy shootout (their beautiful house!) and Booth’s arrest, but what show runners gave viewers was a whole lot more than your typical season opener – the unexpected beating and death of good old Sweets. Talk about a huge surprise – and what felt like a huge slap in the face!..

Ask Matt: October 20

Question: I was so disappointed that Bones killed off Sweets. Why? Why? Why? I really enjoyed him. - Natalie
Matt Roush: By all accounts, everyone on the show liked him, too, so much so that you can almost look at this as a mercy killing, freeing up the actor John Francis Daley to pursue his burgeoning career as a screenwriter and director. (Read the post-mortem here.) If they hadn't killed Sweets, they probably would have had to write him out of much of the season, and as we've discussed many times before in this space, the death of a major character can provide valuable new story material for a show and its characters (in this case, Booth more especially). Can't say I'm crazy about how quickly they subbed in the character of Agent Aubrey, who while not a replacement (different duties and attitude) serves to help us forget, even temporarily, that there's a gaping absence on this team.

Bones Baby Scoop: Facts of Life Vet to Deliver Sweets and Daisy's Son

You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have… the sure-to-be bittersweet birth of Daisy and Sweets’ son.

Enter Mindy Cohn.

TVLine has learned exclusively that Bones has enlisted the Facts of Life vet to inject some lightness and levity into single-mom Daisy’s delivery as her New Age-focused doula.
The character, Valentina, is into crystals, vibes, and spiritual energy and is adamant that childbirth must be a peaceful and non-traumatic process. She dims the birthing room lights and pipes in bird sounds while Daisy’s in labor because a “peaceful mother makes a happy baby.”
Look for Cohn’s Valentina to bring Daisy and Sweets’ lil’ guy into the world in an early-December episode, titled “The Puzzler In The Pit.”
In the meantime, Sweets’ ex Jessica (Laura Spencer), resurfaces in this Thursday’s episode — and finds herself smack dab in the middle of a little Booth-Brennan work fight. Exclusive video below!...

In Appreciation of Sweets: A Tribute to the Baby Duck

GORDON GORDON: He wants what we all want. He wants to find out his place in the world.
BRENNAN: We can find a permanent place for him. Right?
I keep expecting to see Sweets in Booth’s doorway. He should still be sharing fries with Angela at the diner or carrying a box of files into the FBI conference room. Something’s off without him, and it’s sudden and unsettling and unreal in a way that real loss tends to be.

I don’t usually come to Bones for a realistic experience of grief. I’m in it for the redemption stories, the people with messed up lives who’ve found work worth doing. Sweets was a damaged kid. Lance Sweets, psychologist, boy genius, shipper, and Star Wars aficionado, was abused, then adopted at age six by an elderly couple, who died within weeks of each other just before he started at the FBI. He found his purpose through their kindness. “They gave you a good life,” says Gordon Gordon, “and that’s why you believe that people can be saved by other people with good hearts.”...

(Video) Emily Deschanel's Favorite Sweets Moments From 'Bones' Will Make You Cry

Thursday's episode of Bones found the team finally getting some justice for their late friend, and in the end, a little closure.
The hour also featured a very Jeffersonian-esque memorial service in which the team paid tribute to Sweets, and honored all he did for them (for Brennan and Booth, that included bringing them together romantically).
The video, available exclusively first on Mashable, touches on even more points in the trio's unique and lovely friendship. Prepare your tissues..

BONES: Carla Gallo on Filming Sweets’ Memorial, Possibly Giving Birth On-Screen, and More

The BONES team said goodbye to Sweets in “The Lance to the Heart” in a very appropriate way: they gathered together, shared stories of what he meant to him, and sang “Coconut” as they scattered his ashes. I spoke with BONES’ Carla Gallo (Daisy) about filming the memorial for her on-screen love, possibly giving birth on-screen, her favorite Sweets/Daisy moment, and more…
