‘Bones’: Meet the New Woman in Booth’s Life

When Fox’s Bones returned last week, Booth (David Boreanaz) came back from Afghanistan a man in love. The culprit: Hannah Burley, a war correspondent that Booth met during his time overseas. Given how hardcore fans of Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth are, it’s no surprise that Hannah’s introduction has been met with some uproar. And her first episode — this Thursday at 8 p.m. — hasn’t even aired yet!

“I hope the audience will give Hannah’s character a chance,” says Katheryn Winnick, who plays Booth’s new love. Winnick, who started her own martial arts school at the age of sixteen and has black belts in Tae Kwon Do and karate — don’t mess with her! — recently chatted with members of the press about her character and what she brings to the show.

BONES Katheryn Winnick: Hannah’s Not There Just To Be The Cute Girlfriend

Bones fans, you’re going to have a hard time hating on Katheryn Winnick when she joins the show as Hannah Burley, Booth’s new love interest. In a conference call with reporters, Katheryn talked about how much she likes her character (and hopes you will, too), and her enthusiasm was infectious.

Katheryn is clearly delighted to be playing this character, although she is aware that she’s “causing a stir” among some fans by seeming to come between Booth and Brennan. Still, she’s optimistic about how Hannah will be received.

Ballet and Heath Scares

@BonesOnFox Ever since it was announced that there would be a new love interest for FBI Special Agent Seeley Booth (David Boreanaz) on the new season of Bones, the diehard fans have been lighting Twitter and message boards ablaze with a range of elation at the narrative complications and bitter hatred (more of the latter, it would seem from my Twitter feed) before the character of Hannah (played by Katheryn Winnick) has ever appeared.

As Hannah is set to appear (finally!) in this week’s episode, how will she stand in the way of what fans really want – Booth and Temperance “Bones” Brennan together? How long will Hannah be around? Is she aware of the sexual tension that has helped drive the Fox crime drama since day one? ADAM: Well, Brennan obviously isn't the corpse, but her resemblance to the victim is uncanny. Executive producer Stephen Nathan says the experience will be educational for Bones. "Brennan gets to look at herself objectively, which is something she's never really been able to do," he says. Question: I'm a huge fan of Bones, and I would like to know what happened to the black-and-white episode of Bones that Hart Hanson planned on doing last season, but it never happened? Does he plan on doing the black-and-white episode this season and what will it be about and when will it air? — Marie

Matt Roush: I asked, and got what I guess is a bit of a scoop from none other than Hart Hanson. He writes: "We were anxious to do a black and white episode: a noir episode last year. However, once Fringe did it, we reconsidered because it would just look like a stolen idea. This year, our 'out of the box' episode is coming up. We are telling a story completely from Brennan's POV, meaning we will see the world the way she sees it. We hope this will give a little insight into how Brennan perceives all around her."

Sounds like a great episode to me, even better than another spin around the noir block. Thanks, Hart.

A) .I am shooting the sixth season of "Bones" (on episode 6 right now). I’m writing four web-series that I’ll produce through Theatre Junkies Productions (my production company that produced “Validation” that has over 4.1 million hits on Youtube and seems to be climbing by the thousands every week, Yay!). Plus, I have four short films with Theatre Junkies we will shoot before 2010 is out and our feature film "Shuffle" that stars myself and Tamara Taylor is out running the festival circuit. We are waiting to see where we will premiere it. I’m also teaching & coaching again, when I have time, which doesn’t seem to be that often, but I find ways to squeeze it in. I know I know, I don’t sleep much, but I’m having a blast. Sleeps overrated anyway....but not really.

Bones Opens Season 6 with Special Shout-Outs To Fans

A sweet thing happened in the season 6 premiere of Bones that you may not have noticed. To the average viewer nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Booth and Brennan solved a case, there was plenty of unresolved sexual tension and the occasional line that made you laugh out loud. It was Bones as usual.

What you may have missed were the writers of Bones giving some special shout-outs to their fans. I’m talking about more than just addressing fan concerns like the Brennan’s seemingly inconsistent fear of snakes and the fact that Booth never wears his seatbelt in the car. No, the writers of Bones threw in a couple sweet moments that were not only for the fans, they were BY the fans...

In fourth[(for all of Thursday night], Fox's premieres for "Bones" (9.8 million, 2.7) and "Fringe" (5.8 million, 2.1) felt the heat. "Bones" was down 13%; "Fringe" was off 30%, though Fox premiered the show a week earlier last year.

Fringe was down 30% from last year’s premiere, but like Bones, last week it premiered a week earlier (that night its only new competition was on NBC and CW).

LOOK Effects Begins Sixth Year of Visual Effects for "Bones"

LOOK Effects' Hollywood facility has begun creating the visual effects for the new season of FOX Television's "Bones." This is the sixth season for the popular series and the sixth year LOOK has produced the effects. The new season premieres Thursday, September 23rd at 8:00pm.

The Emmy-nominated LOOK has produced all of the visual effects for "Bones" since the first season. With 22 episodes per season and an average of 15 shots each, LOOK has delivered close to 2,000 shots to the team at "Bones." LOOK's work for the show is a combination of 2D, 3D and practical effects. The primary areas for their work are set extensions, interiors, enhancing practical effects, gore enhancement and bugs.

"The relationship LOOK has with the show's creators is key," says LOOK's visual effects supervisor Christian Cardona. "They're so open to our input and they respect and enjoy our ideas. Collaborating with clients is one of our core strengths and we work very hard to get them the most bang for their buck combined with the most creative solution."

Question: How do you think Bones is going to do against some tough new competition on Thursday nights this season? Bones has always had a loyal following, but I'm concerned that The Big Bang Theory will hurt it. Or is this going to be a case of two very different shows each getting their own solid audiences? Perhaps the competing comedies on NBC have more reason to be concerned? I'm not sure what's on ABC in that time slot. How do you think things will shake out at 8/7c for Thursday shows this season? — Doris

Matt Roush: Bones has established a nice little niche on Thursdays, plugging a hole that was very problematic for Fox for a long time, and while Big Bang is expected to do some major damage on the night, you're right that the impact will likely be greater on NBC's comedies. Not that Bones will have it easy. It's a light procedural with a definite geek factor, so there will be overlap with Big Bang's mass following, I'm sure. But even if bones does take a steeper drop than we'd like, I'm betting Fox knows there's very little else they could put in this ultra-competitive time period that would do any better. So I wouldn't worry about it too much. (Oh, and the ABC show in the time period? My Generation, which most observers are predicting will have quite the uphill climb. I doubt the critics will do much to help on that front.)

BONES: Creator Hart Hanson Answers Questions on Season 5 Controversies

As many BONES fans are likely aware, there were a few, um, controversial storylines in the fifth season.
