In my review of the Bones S10 finale, I noted that I approached The Next in the Last
as a season finale rather than a show finale, meaning that I didn’t
watch it thinking, ‘what if this had been the last episode ever?’...

BONES: Stephen Nathan on Saying Goodbye to the Show (For Now)
As BONES’ tenth season comes to an end, characters could be making some major life-changing decisions.
Whether those changes come to fruition or not, the team will have to deal with a significant challenge in Thursday’s season finale: a case brings (the still-dead) Pelant back into the team’s life.
And while BONES will return for an 11th season this fall, its long-time showrunner, Stephen Nathan, is stepping down. (BONES writers Jonathan Collier and Michael Peterson will run season 11.)
When Nathan’s exit was announced, Fox shared that in the immediate future, he would be working on other projects, but he planned on returning “later” in season 11. Nathan — who has worked on the Fox drama since the first season — echoed that sentiment to me during a recent interview sharing, “It’s time to take a step back, get a little bit of perspective, do some other things, and then come back a little refreshed, hopefully.”
But with his (temporary) goodbye looming, I asked Nathan how he felt about leaving the series, for now, and what about the experience has meant the most to him/what he was most proud of. His answers are below, and speak (beautifully) to what the show has meant to him throughout the years. Why Bones' Season Finale Will Feel Like the End of the Series
If you didn't already know that Bones will be back on Fox next fall, you certainly wouldn't be able to tell by watching Thursday's Season 10 finale.
The episode (8/7c, Fox) features the recently reunited Booth (David Boreanaz) and Brennan (Emily Deschanel) revisiting the work of dead serial killer Pelant (Andrew Leeds), when a new set of remains bears striking resemblance to Pelant's M.O. Where did the season go? It seems like only yesterday we were waiting to learn Booth’s fate after he was imprisoned in Bones’ season premiere, Sweets and Daisy had some big news to share, and Christine was an only child. penultimate hour signaled big changes ahead for the Jeffersonian team
as the show heads into Season 11.
Hodgins (T.J. Thyne) and Angela (Michaela Conlin) are taking official steps to moving to Paris, including handing in their notice to Brennan (Emily Deschanel). At the same time, Brennan is becoming much more reliant on her gut instincts and emotions to deal with Booth’s (David Boreanaz) gambling addiction — a change that’s been ten years in the making.

Ask Matt: Bones Departures, June 4th
Question: Everything I read about Bones right now is focused on Booth and Brennan and how long their separation will last. Personally, I'm more interested in the other
couple on the show: Hodgins and Angela! Are they really going to move
to France? Are the two leaving the show? What do you know? — Kelly
Matt Roush: This is as good a time as any as we re-establish this column on the TV Insider site to remind everyone that this is not a spoiler column. I'm happy to comment on what has already happened on a show (or has been widely reported), but I'm not going to spoil, speculate or tease too heavily about what's to come. I will tell you I've seen this week's episode of Bones, which advances this particular subplot—which clearly seems to have been spoiled elsewhere (I don't seek out such things)—about Hodgins and Angela and their romantic notions of Paris. Several characters make note during the hour, in a very meta way, that they never thought they'd be doing this job so long.
But here's how Fox describes next week's storyline for the June 11 season finale: "Angela is skeptical about her and Hodgins' decision to move to Paris [maybe that's where the spoiler came from? Good move, Fox!], and Brennan and Booth contemplate options outside of the Jeffersonian and FBI." All of which sounds to me like standard-issue end-of-season teases, in this case perhaps amplified by the fact that the producers may not have known at the time of production whether this was in fact the end of the series. (The finale's episode title just changed from "The End in the End" to "The Next in the Last," which sounds a lot less final to me.) So basically, since I don't know anything for sure—and if I did, I wouldn't tell—I'd assume if you don't hear anything different, or unless the actors start giving exit interviews, that everyone will be sticking around for a while longer. Although they may be leaving some of that up in the air for cliffhanger purposes.
Question: I am glad I found you on Twitter and your column again. My question is about showrunners. I have always been a big Bones fan and now I see that they are changing show-runners again. I have to admit I wasn't as crazy about the past few seasons as previous ones, but I feel that may also be due to the age of the franchise. So, I was wondering how big of an effect does the showrunner have. Does he or she set the overall tone of the show, hire their own writers, dictate general character development? I do miss Hart Hanson. I was surprised about the change in the feel of the show since Stephen Nathan has always been a part of the show. — Tina
Matt Roush: Welcome to TV Insider and thanks for the question. I'll admit I don't watch this kind of show with the sort of constant attention that would allow me to make this kind of judgment. But it's a fact that, no matter who's in charge, it's harder to keep any series feeling fresh when it hits the decade mark, and a sense of franchise fatigue is bound to set in. The need to keep shaking things up, as in Booth's gambling addiction causing a (presumably) temporary separation in their marriage this season, will strike many as contrived and annoying, and that's fair. Your bigger question is harder to answer. As you noted, Stephen Nathan has always been part of the show, so his taking over the running of Bones was more an evolution than revolution.

So we've seen. In Booth's (David Boreanaz) relapse into gambling addiction, in how various squints have dealt with the death of a beloved coworker sweets (John Francis Daley), and now in the looming specter of an old foe.
Serial killer Christopher Pelant (Andrew Leeds) will return in tonight's season finale -- despite having been seemingly shot and killed by Booth last year. "It's not a flashback," promises Nathan. "And he's not a ghost. It's real." Pelant wreaked havoc on the lives of both Booth and wife Brennan (Emily Deschanel) by framing her for murder and breaking up the duo's engagement. However, Nathan says, fans worried that the Pelant story will shanghai the episode can take a deep breath. "The hour is not going to be all about him."
Pelant's reappearance as members of the Jeffersonian team are questioning their futures. After ten years of murder solving, the natives are beginning to get a little restless -- including Booth and Brennan, who are still struggling to reassemble their marriage, given Booth's setback. "This was the biggest emotional trauma they've faced as a couple," says Nathan, "so they're still feeling the effects of it." A life away from the Jeffersonian, and the FBI, might be what's best for them, for daughter Christine, and for their unborn baby. Could a major move be on the horizon?
"There are going to be big changes," Nathan confirms. Since the show hadn't been picked up for Season 11 when the finale was shooting (it since has been renewed), the writers decided to construct an episode that would serve as a satisfying series and season ender. says Nathan, "It isn't a cliffhanger, but there is a cliff." -- Oriana Schwindt
