Ask Ausiello: October 29, 200th News!

Question: Any Bones nuggets?  —Susan
Ausiello: How about an updated Episode 200 cast list? The first four Bones vets locked for the milestone hour are… Ryan O’Neal (Brennan’s pa Max), Billy F. Gibbons (Angela’s pa Billy), Laura Spencer (squintern Jessica) and Ignacio Serricchio (squintern Rodolfo). More to come!
Question: Any chance you have some Bones scoop that you have yet to share? —Rachel
Ausiello: The show will take a breather after No. 200 with a run of quieter, more traditional Bones installments. “The 200th episode is a great big, black, sucking hole that all the effort has gone into,” notes series creator Hart Hanson. “So the show is somewhat smaller for at least three or four episodes. We go back to our normal show after the 200th, for a while.”

Got any new Bones scoop? — HeatherThose of you hankering for another Bones wedding might want to keep those expectations in check. Although the subject of a marriage between Cam and Arastoo comes up again in the Nov. 6 episode, one member of the couple isn't exactly ready for a new level of commitment. Worse, that fight spills into the Jeffersonian when Arastoo's dissertation proposal is rejected by Dr. Brennan and Cam tries to change Brennan's mind. Unfortunately for Cam, she'll quickly learn that opening her mouth has only made things worse between her and Arastoo.

'Bones': 7 Reasons Why Aubrey Kicks Ass and Fits Right In

So, what do we think about Bones' most recent FBI addition, Special Agent James Aubrey? Should we keep him around for a while? Well, according to the votes that really count, Booth's unflappable yet ballsy protege fits right in and actually kicks some fairly impressive -- albeit subdued -- ass. After reading our list of reasons we believe you'll agree Agent Aubrey, portrayed by John Boyd, earned the right to purchase his own little Mighty Hut at the corner of Adorably-Mentally-Dextrous Street and No-Bull-Shit Boulevard in the Bones Universe. Too much? No way. This Quantico grad is an exceptional 'Guy Friday' for Booth and a formidable addition to the discriminating brain trust of the Jeffersonian Medico-Legal Lab.

Let's first admit that it's human nature to resist change; to compare the new to the old and find the former woefully lacking. Well, the comparisons stop now. Sweets is gone and Aubrey is here; not as a replacement, simply as an addition. As Brennan would say, "Inertia demands that we move forward." To which Booth would then add, "... And murder waits for no man."...

‘Bones’ (Season 10): Life Without Sweets

It was less than a month ago now that Bones fans tuned into the debut of the Fox series’ tenth season. It was finally time for us to see what happened to Booth and Bones in the aftermath of the crazy shootout (their beautiful house!) and Booth’s arrest, but what show runners gave viewers was a whole lot more than your typical season opener – the unexpected beating and death of good old Sweets. Talk about a huge surprise – and what felt like a huge slap in the face!..

Ask Matt: October 20

Question: I was so disappointed that Bones killed off Sweets. Why? Why? Why? I really enjoyed him. - Natalie
Matt Roush: By all accounts, everyone on the show liked him, too, so much so that you can almost look at this as a mercy killing, freeing up the actor John Francis Daley to pursue his burgeoning career as a screenwriter and director. (Read the post-mortem here.) If they hadn't killed Sweets, they probably would have had to write him out of much of the season, and as we've discussed many times before in this space, the death of a major character can provide valuable new story material for a show and its characters (in this case, Booth more especially). Can't say I'm crazy about how quickly they subbed in the character of Agent Aubrey, who while not a replacement (different duties and attitude) serves to help us forget, even temporarily, that there's a gaping absence on this team.

(Video) Meet Booth's new partner James Aubrey in 'Bones'

The team on Bones might have lost an important member with the death of Sweets in the season premiere, but they've also added some new blood this season with new agent James Aubrey (John Boyd).
But exactly how's the sarcastic young agent fitting in?
If you ask the cast, swimmingly — both on screen and off.
"How Booth relates to him is completely different than how he would relate to Sweets," David Boreanaz says in a video piece exclusive to Mashable. "For John Boyd, it's an opportunity for him to fall into a great family of where we work every day."
And getting integrated into the Jeffersonian team has been a joy for Boyd, as well.
"It's really fun to get to come onto a show and discover all of the stuff that everyone sort of takes for granted and sees all the time — like the first time we discover a body and Aubrey'd gagging and can't stop talking about how disgusting it is," he says in the video. "That's really fun to do."
For more about Aubrey and what's coming up for him on Bones, watch the video below.
Bones airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on FOX.

Bones Baby Scoop: Facts of Life Vet to Deliver Sweets and Daisy's Son

You take the good, you take the bad, you take them both and there you have… the sure-to-be bittersweet birth of Daisy and Sweets’ son.

Enter Mindy Cohn.

TVLine has learned exclusively that Bones has enlisted the Facts of Life vet to inject some lightness and levity into single-mom Daisy’s delivery as her New Age-focused doula.
The character, Valentina, is into crystals, vibes, and spiritual energy and is adamant that childbirth must be a peaceful and non-traumatic process. She dims the birthing room lights and pipes in bird sounds while Daisy’s in labor because a “peaceful mother makes a happy baby.”
Look for Cohn’s Valentina to bring Daisy and Sweets’ lil’ guy into the world in an early-December episode, titled “The Puzzler In The Pit.”
In the meantime, Sweets’ ex Jessica (Laura Spencer), resurfaces in this Thursday’s episode — and finds herself smack dab in the middle of a little Booth-Brennan work fight. Exclusive video below!...

Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan Share HIghs and Lows

Nathan, 66, runs day-to-day on Fox's aging workhorse, while creator Hanson, 57, splits his time with midseason entry Backstrom. No other scripted series of Bones' age is as prized by its network.

Worst pitch meeting (Hanson): "Pitching Bones to Dana Walden and Jennifer Salke. I talked with great enthusiasm for a [long] time, only to have Dana say, 'Wait a minute. Is this a TV show?' "...

Interview: Emily Deschanel and David Boreanaz – Bones

Q) Can you first just talk about how Booth and Brennan are going to deal with everything that’s going on, both Booth being in jail and also after that fact?
Emily: Booth is in trouble.  We’re worried about him.  We think he’s not going to survive being in prison.  We have different ideas about how we’re going to get him out.  Being in prison brings up a lot of stuff for Booth, as David can follow up on.  He’s suffering from PTSD because of being there, as well as being tortured, and what not, being in the military and the Army Rangers in his past.  He’s gone through a lot in his life. We’re dealing with a lot when we come back from this season.  He’s in prison or jail.  We’re working to get him out.  He’s not safe and all these people want to kill him there.  It puts a real strain on the relationship even when he does get out of prison and it’s a big deal.  It’s not just going to be healed in one episode or something.  It has long lasting repercussions.

David: Yes.  I think it’ll last throughout the season.  I don’t think it will necessarily be as dark as some people might think it will be.  I think the first two episodes really have the sense of how dark it could be where Booth is and who he trusts with inside of the FBI, how he decides to take things into his own hands, and how Bones deals with that and gets him back. There’s a great moment in episode two that is a very strong moment between both of them and she really gets on his case to a point where he has to decide what to do.  I’m not going to really say what that is, but it is definitely, it’s a page turner for their relationship and see how that unfolds....

BONES star David Boreanaz on Season 10 and the future of the series – Exclusive Interview

Fox’s BONES is now in its tenth season, Thursdays at 8 PM. Viewers are pleased that in the first two episodes of the new season FBI Agent Seeley Booth, played by David Boreanaz, has recovered from the personal and professional injuries he received in the Season 9 finale. Booth was shot and incarcerated for killing three law enforcement officers, who were actually armed home invaders, sent as part of a vast conspiracy uncovered by Booth and his partner/wife, forensic anthropologist Dr. Temperance Brennan, played by Emily Deschanel.
Boreanaz is also a producer on BONES, and has so far directed eight episodes of the series, including the action-packed, guns blazing Season 9 finale. At a party thrown by Fox for the Television Critics Association, Boreanaz talks about his directing – and the possible future of BONES beyond Season 10.
ASSIGNMENT X: The shootout in Booth and Brennan’s home looked like it could have been part of a high-intensity action feature like, say, HEAT. Are you a big Michael Mann fan?
DAVID BOREANAZ: I think that my sense of – well, it’s nothing to do with Michael Mann. I love Michael Mann, but I do think my sense of learning as a director, you can see how I move my cameras around a lot, and I like all the action, so I will continue to do that every year, and with my feature projects. I really like directing a lot...

(Video) Brennan's Concerns About Booth Mount in This 'Bones' Sneak Peek

Booth puts up a nice front in the exclusive sneak peek (below) from the next new episode of Bones, but there's no fooling Brennan. She can see right through him.
There's no doubt that everyone is having a hard time dealing with Sweets' season premiere death, but Booth's lack of sleep and unwillingness to emotionally deal with the trauma from the last few months continues to cause concern for his wife.

Predictably, Booth has a tough-guy reaction to it all — "I'll sleep when I'm tired," he says — but we know it's only a matter of time until it all catches up with him.
After the season premiere, executive producer Stephen Nathan told Mashable that despite the team's resident psychologist being gone, they would discover his time with them had been more valuable than they even realized. "I think, really, they are left with what Sweets has given them to deal with the challenges they're facing," he said. "So, they've all been changed by Sweets. It's like somebody letting go of the bicycle when they're teaching you to ride it. They now have to ride the bicycle — they've all been through a lot together."...

Tales from the Writer's Room: Part One

One of my favorite parts about writing for TV or film is the magical process of seeing my words come to life. In reality, it was a very talented props person named Ian, and not magic, that made the centrifuge I wrote about on Thursday appear in the entryway of our building Monday morning. But unless I end up winning Powerball, scriptwriting is probably the closest I’ll ever come to that genie-in-a-bottle moment: your wish is my command.  I hope I never become too world-weary to appreciate how special this feels.
So, I called this blog “Tales from the Writers Room,” but the truth is, I’m not actually spending much of my time in the writers’ room these days as I start to prep my first Bones episode. However, I do hope this kicks off my (sporadic) blog about the super awesome job of writing for a network television show.  For the uninitiated, Bones is a drama that airs on Fox, 8pm Thursday nights.

Some props, including a piece of the centrifuge, which will end up looking a lot more magical (and bigger) when the show finally airs.

Ask Ausiello: October 7

Question: While I know that the Bones‘ 200th episode premise is still as clear as mud, can you share any other scoop on what’s coming up on the show this season? —Amelia
Ausiello: Pay close attention to background music in the final scene of this week’s episode. Rumor has it someone connected to the show will be doing the vocals.

Question: Bones‘ 10th season only just began, but I want to know where we stand with Season 11. —Emilia
Ausiello: We’re likely a ways off from knowing anything definitive, according to showrunner Stephen Nathan. “I think it might take a little bit of time because there are [actor] renegotiations involved,” he explains, adding that the early ratings on Season 10 certainly point to more Bones. “If everybody keeps watching as much as they have been — and on the most difficult night on television — then I am sure we will be back. It’s something that we’re anticipating and hope for. It doesn’t seem as if the show is slowing down.”...

Q) A lot of fans have noted a similarity between Lucas and the character you played on “Bones.” Did you have any trepidation taking on a role that was close to one you’d already played?

Tammy: I'm choosing not to focus on the loss of Sweets, but rather the future of Bones. I think it's for the best. Help me move on with some scoop please! How about some info on the show's 200th episode to help take your mind off of things? "It will be an episode unlike any we've ever done before," executive producer Stephen Nathan spilled. "We wanted to give a little gift to the fans…give them a little gift showing our characters in situation they would never normally find ourselves in and just see our characters from a different perspective." And no, before you ask, it's not a dream sequence. And yes, familiar faces from the past will be stopping by for the milestone episode. "We're going to have as many people who have crossed our paths as we possibly can," Nathan teased, before adding, There are limitations to that, of course."

David Boreanaz in this Week's People Mag

David Boreanaz returns for his 10th season as an FBI Special Agent on Fox's hit series Bones, but the 45-year-old actor admits he's now much more a family man when he chatted with PEOPLE this week about "one last thing" ...

In Appreciation of Sweets: A Tribute to the Baby Duck

GORDON GORDON: He wants what we all want. He wants to find out his place in the world.
BRENNAN: We can find a permanent place for him. Right?
I keep expecting to see Sweets in Booth’s doorway. He should still be sharing fries with Angela at the diner or carrying a box of files into the FBI conference room. Something’s off without him, and it’s sudden and unsettling and unreal in a way that real loss tends to be.

I don’t usually come to Bones for a realistic experience of grief. I’m in it for the redemption stories, the people with messed up lives who’ve found work worth doing. Sweets was a damaged kid. Lance Sweets, psychologist, boy genius, shipper, and Star Wars aficionado, was abused, then adopted at age six by an elderly couple, who died within weeks of each other just before he started at the FBI. He found his purpose through their kindness. “They gave you a good life,” says Gordon Gordon, “and that’s why you believe that people can be saved by other people with good hearts.”...

(Video) Emily Deschanel's Favorite Sweets Moments From 'Bones' Will Make You Cry

Thursday's episode of Bones found the team finally getting some justice for their late friend, and in the end, a little closure.
The hour also featured a very Jeffersonian-esque memorial service in which the team paid tribute to Sweets, and honored all he did for them (for Brennan and Booth, that included bringing them together romantically).
The video, available exclusively first on Mashable, touches on even more points in the trio's unique and lovely friendship. Prepare your tissues..

Post Mortem: Bones Boss Talks Missing Funeral Guests, the 'Furious' Booth-Brennan Fight, Sweets' Twin and More

R.I.P. Sweets.

On Thursday’s Bones, Booth, Brennan & Co. paid tribute to John Francis Daley’s fallen shrink with an appropriately no-frills memorial service held on a hilltop overlooking Washington, D.C. (Admit it, you cried during Brennan’s speech. We’re not here to judge you.)

The episode also (mostly) resolved the complex conspiracy that led to Sweets’ untimely death, included a ferocious, impeccably acted Booth-Brennan fight scene, and brought Sweets’ quasi-successor (and eerie doppelgänger) Aubrey into the forefront.

Below, exec producer Stephen Nathan answers our myriad burning questions about the emotional hour. Included among our queries: Why was Sweets’ service so poorly attended, and why wasn’t widow Daisy more of a wreck?...
