BONES Debate: Should Booth and Brennan Get Together This Season?

BONES fans, we’re going to do something a little different today.

Tonight’s brand new episode, “The Pinocchio in the Planter,” has the Jeffersonian team diving into the world of radical honesty — and that inspired our fabulous BONES recapper Sarah Curtis and I to brave that world and debate our real feelings about the possibility of Booth and Brennan getting together this season. (If you’d like some teases on the actual episode, check out what Michaela Conlin told Give Me My Remote earlier this month.)

Before we start our debate, a few things of note to prevent panic/frustration. First of all, what we’re saying below has absolutely nothing to do with any spoilers for the rest of the season. This isn’t about what WILL happen, this is about what we WANT to happen. And for the purpose of this discussion, while Brennan and Booth ARE together in many ways, together equals the intention or actions of being in a romantic relationship. No more defending their relationship as just partners. There would need to be an acknowledgment that there is more than friendship between them and they are going to be acting on it in the immediate future. It doesn’t mean they need to jump into bed, but together = no more significant others, they are committed to each other in whatever way they deem appropriate given their unconventional courtship thus far.

All good? Let’s get to our debate…

Bones Spin-off Buzz

Bones Spin-off Buzz | If you took a shine to last week’s Bones episode that introduced us to Booth’s associate who’s masterful (if not a bit kooky) at locating things, you may be wondering, as I was: If this spin-off “finds” a spot on Fox’s fall sked, is that the whole cast? Just Geoff Stults, Michael Clarke Duncan (who, granted, is almost two grown men) and Saffron Burrows? Well, I “found” the answer. Hart Hanson told me that if The Finder goes to series, there will be at least one other main character to cast: Isabelle, a law enforcement type who is also Walter’s sometime squeeze. (Calling the duo’s dynamic “more emotional than romantic,” Hanson says, “I’d like to avoid doing another ‘will they/won’t they’ series.” And how.) Who would you like see see play Isabelle? Give Hart a hand in Comments! (Go to TVLine to leave comments. Click here.)

Ratings: The Finder

9:00 NBC The Office 3.3/9 6.80

FOX Bones 3.2/9 11.10

CBS CSI (R) 1.6/5 8.40

ABC Grey’s Anatomy (R) 1.2/3 3.86

On the eve of Good Friday (and Earth Day) ABC and CBS were in repeats. Of course Fox would’ve easily won the night regardless with an hour of American Idol that scored a 5.6/18 adults 18-49 rating and an hour of Bones that featured a backdoor pilot for “The Finder,” that garnered a 3.2 adults 18-49 rating. I speculate whether “The Finder” is a keeper probably doesn’t have a lot to do with the ratings. American Idol was down 13% from last week and Bones was down 9%, but look for Idol to be adjusted up a couple of tenths in the final numbers and Bones to be adjusted down due to the overrun.

DAVID BOREANAZ ALWAYS EXPECTS THE UNEXPECTED ON ‘BONES’

Yes, the Jeffersonian team does solve a case each week on Bones, but at its heart, the show is about the relationships between the cast members. Of course, much of the show revolves around Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz), who have run the gamut of emotions, yet maintained a high level of sexual tension throughout the show’s six seasons. And now, with the news that Deschanel is pregnant with her first child, who knows how that might be factored into the show’s seventh season? (The show’s creator, Hart Hanson, has even said he’s not sure how the show will handle it!) That’s all fine with Boreanaz, though — he told us that part of the fun of being on Bones is exploring the unexpected in the Booth/Brennan relationship...

Bones: A Change of Plans - EW Spoilers

‘BONES’: A CHANGE OF PLANS
Hear the one about the old man who turned into mullet-rocking, stone-wash-jeans-wearing bowler? Well, you’re about to.

The Bones season finale, as you might have heard (or read in the TV season finale preview inEW’s latest issue), takes place in a bowling alley where Booth and Brennan go undercover in the bowling world to solve a murder. At press time, the plan was to make Booth (David Boreanaz) into a 75-year-old bowler. That was until the team came to a sad realization just days before filming.

“We could not shoot the episode if he had the four hours in the makeup chair,” executive producer Stephen Nathan says of the team’s tight schedule, which juggled a young guest star who could legally only work 6 hours a day, pregnant star Emily Deschanel’s slightly curtailed schedule, and a tight filming window at the bowling alley. In the end, they had to cut the old man transformation from the plot, even after Boreanaz spent two hours getting a cast of his head.

Instead, the creative team opted for the aforementioned mullet and dated clothing, but Nathan assures: “He will be old next year at some point. We will definitely see David at 75, and we wont have to wait until he’s 75.”

BONES: Saffron Burrows Teases ‘The Finder’

After months of teasing, the BONES backdoor pilot/crossover with a potential new show/spinoff, “The Finder,” will finally air tonight.

As you may remember, the episode/potential series follows former military man Walter Sherman, who can locate anything. However, his polarizing personality — including extreme paranoia and blunt questions/assumptions – makes him difficult to deal with. He’s brought into the BONES world via his connection to Booth, but the two men have a longstanding grudge against each other for reasons viewers will learn tonight. Walter is assisted on cases by his two partners Ike (who is Walter’s bartender and pilot) and Leo (his lawyer).

I caught up with Saffron Burrows (Ike) and we talked about her role, why she was drawn to this show, working with Geoff Stults (Walter) and Michael Clarke Duncan (Leo) and much more…

The Finder Featurette

Spoiler TV snagged a sneak peek of tonight's ep from the Bones iPad App (You can download it yourself now!)

Interview: "The Finder" Star Geoff Stults

With the strong fan bases that both "Bones" and leads David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel have with fans, it makes sense that creator Hart Hanson would try to launch his next series within an episode of his still-popular FOX staple. In tonight's episode, entitled "The Finder," the Jeffersonian gang travels to Miami to solve a case and enlist the help of Walter Sherman, a former Iraqi soldier/acquaintance of Booth's, who has the ability to find anything or anyone. While the show could launch "The Finder" series next season, in tonight's episode Walter mixes it up with the "Bones" cast by creating some sparks with Brennan (Deschanel) and perhaps rubbing Booth (Boreanaz) the wrong way. One side note, in much the way that "Bones" is based on a series of novels by author Kathy Reichs, "The Finder" is based on "The Locator" books, written by Richard Greener...

Kevin Alejandro Snippets

During a week off from shooting HBO's True Blood, Kevin Alejandro (Lafayette's witchy beau Jesus Velasquez) did a little moonlighting with another adored TV bloodsucker.

Earlier this week, David Boreanaz — still remembered for his role as WB vampire Angel — welcomed Kevin to a Tarzana bowling alley to shoot the season finale of Fox's Bones. "I play a guy named Hercules Maldanado, a.k.a. The Tornado," reveals Kevin. "He's a flashy, arrogant man obsessed with bowling, but his skills don't match up. He's sort of his team's dead weight."

Watch for David's Booth and Emily Deschanel's Brennan go undercover as trashy bowlers when the bloody remains of a player in a league Brennan's dad, Max (Ryan O'Neal) plays on is found in the pin resetting machine.

Might Kevin be the killer, considering his character takes the dead guy's place? "Absolutely," teases Kevin. "But everyone in the bowling alley is a suspect. Anyone could have done it. We're some pretty extreme players."

Ask ausiello: April 19

Question: Any new Bones scoop by chance? Hart Hanson can be tricky and makes me a little nervous. Anything to set my mind at ease? —Talitha
Ausiello:
Funny you should ask. TVLine’s Matt Mitovich lightly grilled Teasy McCrypticson about the meaning behind the finale’s title, “The Change in the Game,” during a conference call with reporters. “The last two episodes of this season are going to run the gamut of tones that Bones does, from A to Z,” Hanson shared. “A lot happens in those last two episodes, and I think the title of the season finale, ‘The Change In the Game,’ is about as much as I want to say about it. I think it’s going to be one of those shows that the Bones audience will talk about and enjoy hugely. If anyone feels there’s an anti-climax to it, then I have totally failed at my job.”

Question: Throw me some Bones, would ya? —Cara
Ausiello:
I see what you did there and I’m not amused. Please don’t do it again. Now for the scoop. Makes no Bones about it, Cara — Angela and Hodgins baby is gonna to be delivered by 90210‘s Mrs. Teasley! Actress Denise Dowse — best known as the stern but fair Vice Principal of the original West Bev High — will guest star in the season-ender as Angela’s unflappable baby doc. Speaking of the Bones finale, David Boreanaz confirmed on Twitter that Ryan O’Neal is back for the episode — although he didn’t say why. That’s where exec producer Stephen Nathan comes in. “He is on a bowling team that’s in the same league as our victim,” Nathan explains. “Because Max has had a bedroom-related accident, a space has opened up on the team that Booth fills.” Cue Boreanaz in acid-washed jeans.

Mega Buzz April 19: Bones' Big Finish

The name of the Bones finale has me both worried and excited. What can you tell me about its meaning? — Candice
ADAM:

BONES: Hart Hanson Talks ‘The Change in the Game’ and a Potential Season 7

With the BONES season winding down, it certainly appears that things are about to get crazy.

“The last two episodes of this season, I think, are going to run the whole gamut of tones that BONES does,” series creator Hart Hanson told reporters on a conference call today. “A lot happens in those last two episodes and I think the title of the season finale — ‘The Change in the Game’ — is about as much as I want to say about it in any kind of detail. I think it’s going to be one of those shows that the BONES audience will talk about and enjoy hugely. If anyone feels there’s an anticlimax to it, I’ve totally failed at my job.”

As for the finale title itself, I asked Hanson whether there was any concern about hyping up the fans for a potential change in the dynamic if they weren’t prepared to actually get Booth and Brennan together this season...

'We have a lot of decisions to make as we move forward into season 7,' says @HartHanson on the next #Bones season (incl Emily's pregnancy)

'We have a plan right now...we're shooting the final episode of season 6 and we've had no cause to show or hide much of Emily.' @HartHanson

'As far as that baby goes...I think the Jeffersonian probably has top-notch daycare...will become another source for story,' says@HartHanson

(the baby in reference is NOT Emily's but Angela/Hodgins...)

The season ending has a lot to do with the birth of Angela & Hodgin's baby, FYI, says @harthanson

@HartHanson #BONES: "The baby has a 75% chance of being born fine & a 25% chance of being born blind. The S6 ender has a lot to do w birth."

'We're still tending with the effects of Emily's pregnancy on the show...' no scripts in pipeline to keep shooting to avoid any delays.

...plus, the show is still waiting for its official Season 7 pick up, says @HarthHanson. Network will weigh in heavily on Emily's part in S7

@Snoodit is asking a question on renewal. 'It's just business stuff...license fee negotiations...' says @HartHanson on why no renewal yet.

There will be a #Bones presence at #ComicCon this year but 'we have not had a lot of conversations about it.' @HartHanson

Did you know...Hart had turned down the #JerseyShore idea several times before finally doing it earlier this year. @HartHanson #Bones

That's the end of the @HartHanson #Bones conf call. Damn, that 30 minutes went by FAST!! I'll be posting my collective tweets ASAP...

E Marisa Roffman
.@HartHanson once again mentioned he'd like to do a #Bones and #Fringe crossover. Hey, if Fringe can be animated...

"Season seven would probably be a curtailed season" - @HartHanson says about ED's pregnancy. They have a plan on how to handle it for now.

"I'd like to avoid doing another will-they-won't-they [show]" says @HartHanson re: The Finder.

Because #Bones hasn't been picked up yet, they don't have scripts in the pipeline to possibly shoot over the summer. S7 could be short.

However, @HartHanson is confident #Bones will get renewed.

TV Guide: Matt's Picks: April 18-21

Bones (Thursday, 9/8c, Fox)
Why are Booth and Bones in Florida this week? Welcome to the time-honored TV tradition of the "backdoor pilot." This week's case involves the murder of an Everglades maritime museum guard amid an attempt to steal a 17th century treasure map. They enlist the help of Booth's Iraq War comrade Walter Sherman (Geoff Stults), a well-renowned "finder" — sounds like a series title to me — with "an uncanny gift to unearth anyone and anything." (There's your premise.) Sherman even has an entourage including a co-worker (Saffron Burrows) and legal advisor (Michael Clarke Duncan). All they need now is a series pick-up.

The Renewal Drama Of 2 Fox Drama Series

It looks like no renewal deal is coming today for Fox's veteran medical drama House. Or Bones. The network's two longest-running and strongest drama series are in a similar position: both have been the subject of complex, drawn-out renewal negotiations as neither has a deal for next season. In both cases, the studios (Universal Media Studios for House and 20th Century Fox TV for Bones) have been looking for two-season pickups and have been looking to resolve things sooner rather than later as they also have to make deals with the series' creators/executive producers, David Shore and Hart Hanson, respectively. (UMS also has to deal with re-signing the original supporting cast on House whose contracts are up, though star Hugh Laurie is locked in for next season.) And in both cases, the holdup has been haggling with the network over license fees...
