'Bones' creator Hart Hanson talks Booth's emotional episode

If you haven’t watched this week’s episode of Bones, stop reading now. Spoilers ahead!

Booth’s grandfather Pops (guest star Ralph Waite) visited and brought with him the news that Seeley’s father had died. At first, Booth couldn’t look past his issues with his dad (he hadn’t seen him for 20 years) to see how much his grandfather was hurting. Pops eventually read him an excerpt of a letter he’d found among his son’s things asking him to tell Seeley that he loved him and that he knows he deserved a better father — one like he’d had. Booth’s dad thanked Pops for raising Seeley to be the man he could never be. He’d left Booth a box, which Brennan finally got him to open because, she said, she wanted to talk about it, and while they’re sharing their lives, he can’t shut her out.

When Brennan had asked Angela earlier in the episode what she should do to help Booth, Angela had told her, ”You have to figure out what you can give him that nobody else can.” It turned out that was a reminder that Booth did have some good memories of his father, including their one perfect day in those blue seats at the World Series, and the knowledge that quantum physicists have a theory about how we experience that time that says he deserves to keep them alive. Booth opened the box and found his father’s most precious mementos: his purple heart, a Father’s Day card young Seeley had made him, photos of them together, and their 1980 World Series ticket stubs with a picture of them in the stands. Was there a dry eye in your house? We talked to Bones creator Hart Hanson about the scene. ...

‘Bones’ Advance Review “The Male in the Mail”

I know I usually do The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly of the television shows I review, but this time for Bones, I can’t. That’s not a bad thing, though because there is no bad to report for “The Male in the Mail.” Before I go any farther with this review, I must tip my metaphorical hat to the entire Bones team for creating possibly the best episode ever. Yeah, I went there. For those of you who want to argue (because I know you’re out there and that this will be the one review you find), if it’s not the best episode it is David Boreanaz’s best work to date. Without giving too much away, here is all The Good about the newest episode of Bones....

The Guide to Thursday TV

Always a popular (if sometimes contentious) topic in my Ask Matt forum, Fox's Bones refutes any notion that its heart isn't in the right place in this week's ultimately touching episode (9/8c). Ralph Waite (forever Papa Walton to many of us, though nowadays better known as Jethro's dad on NCIS) makes a welcome return as Booth's grandfather, bearing some unwelcome news that has the very pregnant Bones (Emily Deschanel) wondering how best to reach out to a closed-off Booth (David Boreanaz, who's in especially fine form). "I should be able to help Booth, shouldn't I?" she frets to a sympathetic Angela. Maybe it's the pregnancy hormones and the uncomfortably swelling breasts, but Bones relaxes her guardedness enough to see her guy through an emotional rough patch that conjures up memories both bad and good. As for this week's case, which brings back Tina Majorino as gung-ho Agent Shaw — who'd do anything to impress Booth — let's just say it gives new meaning to the post office's "dead letter" operation. Piecing together this puzzle means putting together a body discovered in multiple shipping boxes — just another day on the job for the squints.

So excited for tonight’s return of BONES. Even more excited for what’s rumored to be an Emmy-worthy episode for David Boreanaz. Anything you care to tease? — Nancy
The TV Addict: As much as I’d love to be able to tease the heartbreaking circumstances that come crashing down on Booth in tonight’s episode that afford David Boreanaz an opportunity to deliver one of his most emotionally impactful performances to date, we’re afraid that to do so would pretty much spoil the episode’s most shocking moment. Cue obligatory ambiguous tease that goes a little something like so: This time, it’s personal.

With all the buzz surrounding Booth, I’m curious if there is anything for us Brennan fans in tonight’s episode of BONES? — Jenn
The TV Addict: Oddly enough, tonight’s episode does an excellent job of highlighting a handful of positives as a result of Brennan’s decreased workload due to Emily Deschanel’s real-life pregnancy. One of which has to do with a hilarious anatomy lesson that Brennan gives Squintern Clark, while another is the return of the always welcome Tina Majorino as Booth’s sidekick Agent Shaw.

Boys and their toys.

While Booth is dealing with a personal crisis in this Thursday’s Bones (Fox, 9/8c), Hodgins and squintern Clark have a little too much fun trying to track down the weapon that chopped up a victim. Sophia, in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla: Bones! Please and thank you!
In this week's episode, Booth (David Boreanaz) is doing his best to keep his feelings under wraps after his grandfather gives him some very troubling news. Meanwhile, the team is busy unwrapping a body that has been sliced, diced and shipped in multiple boxes to the post office. Word to the wise: There are some pretty gruesome guts and squeamish sounds in this episode, so please choose your TV snack carefully. And if you have ever wondered what Corey Matthews look like all grown up then you're in luck! Ben Savage guest stars as a whipped husband who also just so happens to be a murder suspect. Hmmm, wonder what Topanga would think of that…

TRUE or FALSE teaser: #Bones #704 “The Male In The Mail” @BonesOnFox

We’ve got another new episode of Bones coming this Thursday and in the “Male In The Mail” episode, the season continues strong as we get a really fun (and, of course, gross) case, some great heart-to-hearts and excellent character moments. One of those moments (which I won’t spoil here) got me pretty darn weepy, too! Can’t wait to hear what you have to say once you’ve seen the show this Thursday at 9/8c on Fox. ...

InsideTV's Spoiler Room: November 23

Hi Sandra. I’m loving Bones and Booth as a couple, but are we going to see flashbacks? When they first got together? When everyone found out they were having a baby together? Booth being naked and cooking an omelet? — Megh
Um, I second your desire for an omelet flashback. Too bad for us, there isn’t one in next week’s episode — but what you will see are some really adorable peeks at Booth’s childhood (which is a flashback of sorts, right)? And there’s more naked-around-the-house talk — but this time it’s Brennan! (Do these people ever wear clothes at home? Is this just something attractive people do? Discuss. Or not… Let’s not.)

I know that the abbreviated Bones season means that we’ll focus on the main characters more, but I’m dying to know if we’re going to see Parker this season. I would love to know his reaction/how he deals with getting a little sister… or have we forgotten that Booth already has a kid? He’s adorable, but even we don’t see him, will this get addressed? Thanks! — Ruth
He’ll be back — but later. This week, however, he does come up in a truly touching conversation between Booth and Pops. In fact, the episode is full of really amazing scenes between them both, as discussion of fatherhood takes center stage after Booth receives some news about his own dad. You’ll be in tears by the end of the episode — as will Booth

Ask Ausiello: November 22

Question: I know Tina Majorino’s Agent Shaw character returns in the Dec. 1 episode of Bones, and the press release mentions that she will learn the importance of teamwork. Does that mean that we are going to see her work with Sweets as well as Booth? —Rex
Ausiello: Agent Shaw does indeed return on Dec. 1 (sporting a cute, new haircut!). And in her quest to help/impress Booth during a rough time, she works with quite a few of the other characters on a case. In addition to bouncing ideas off of Sweets, she gets to watch Angela do her thing, prompting the newbie to gush, “I can’t believe I’m getting to work with you people!” Aw, shucks.

Question: Any chance we can get some Bones scoop about Angela/Hodgins? —Shelby
Ausiello: Hangela is relegated to the backburner in the aforementioned Dec. 1 episode, an hour that mostly belongs to David Boreanaz’ Booth. Ralph Waite returns as grandpops to deliver some big news to Booth about his father. By the end of the episode, you’ll be looking at those blue Veterans Stadium seats in Booth’s apartment in a whole new light.

Can you tell us anything about next week's Bones? I heard that David Boreanaz killed it! — montgomerysloan, via Twitter
ADAM:
How did you hear that? (Do tell.) I can confirm that Booth will receive some very tragic news from his grandfather, and Boreanaz's performance is pretty devastating. Fortunately, Booth has a great support system in Brennan, who will keep her usual iciness in check. But will she be able to keep her bangin' new pregnancy body in check??? Yeah, the episode won't be all tears.

Wes in Los Gatos, Calif: Bones!
The Dec. 1 episode, "The Male in the Mail," will be a real treat for longtime fans of Bones (Emily Deschanel) and Booth (David Boreanaz). There is a scene at the end between those two that is so moving and so touching, if you aren't at the very least tearing up, you are a robot and we must find and kill you before you take over the planet! And then of course there is this line: "Do you mind if I spend the whole evening naked?"
