(Scan, Article, Transcription) Throw Back Wednesday: The Lovely Bones

The Lovely Bones by Anna David
Emily Deschanel's smart and sexy vibe creates chemistry from anthropology

Bones Wednesdays 9/8c, FOX

Emily Deschanel won the lead role on Bones by going toe-to-toe with costar David Boreanaz -- literally.

Brought in at the eleventh hour, Deschanel was reading with Boreanaz when he suddenly moved toward her. "Ninety percent of actors would take a step back, but she stepped into him," says executive producer Hart Hanson."That's the key to chemistry. They're equal."

As the coolly methodical forensic anthropologist and novelist Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan, Deschanel has made the study of skeletal remains a reason for eight million viewers to seek out the investigative drama. That, and the rumbling sexual tension between Bones and Seeley Booth (Boreanaz), a special agent from the FBI's Homicidal Investigation Unit.

This week, Bones and Booth travel to California to investigate the body parts of a woman found near Los Angeles International Airport. The victim's extensive plastic surgery makes the probe more perplexing. Actor-director Penny Marshall, who made her bones on Laverne & Shirley, has a cameo.

"I've never done anything this intense before," Deschanel says of her first crack at episodic TV. "I'm in almost every scene and working every day."

Most weekends, she rehearses with Boreanaz. "From the minute I met with him, it just felt right," says Deschanel of the actor who, cut his teeth on Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Angel. "We take our work seriously, but we have fun with it," she says. "We trust each other and know each other's secrets."

(Gossipmongers, take note: Boreanaz is married to actress Jaime Bergman, and Deschanel considers their 3-year-old son, Jaden Rayne, her "boyfriend.")

A lithe and lighthearted theater graduate of Boston University, Deschanel, 28, grew up in a home where drama was taken seriously. Her father, Caleb, is a celebrated cinematographer whose work includes "The Passion of the Christ." Her sister Zooey ("Almost Famous") is a screen actress. Deschanel delights in her character's prickly presence and respects her dedication to foraging for the truth. "There's a difference between being nice and being good," she says. "Brennan isn't always nice, but she is always good."

Her work has required Deschanel to bone up on human anatomy. "Before shooting technical scenes, Eric Millegan, who plays my assistant, and I will be singing show tunes or quoting our favorite comedy movies," she says. "Then suddenly I'm saying lines like 'The scapula is shattered in many places.'"

"At the beginning it was so hard," she says. "I learned about bones in school a long time ago, and now I'm learning them all over again."

According to executive producer Hanson, Deschanel Demonstrated right from her audition that she had the will and winning way needed to bring Bones to life.

"We needed three things," recalls Hanson. "Someone who was sexy, smart and funny. No one had all three, then in she came. Within five minutes we were doing handsprings because she had all those things -- and more."

Have A Great Summer Hiatus!

Have a great summer hiatus, Boneheads. I hope you enjoyed the season finale as much as I did. I know we're fortunate to join together once again in September to watch the Season 11 finale. Not many shows get to that point and the Bones crew should be really proud! Have a wonderful break! There will be a few posts every now and then here on the blog, but of course it will slow. So I'll see you soon, if not in September. :)

Genre, History, and Hope as a Fan of Bones

(No spoilers here if you’ve seen the most recent episode, but there is mild speculation.)

I’ve been waffling all week about this post. I’ve had discussions about some of this before, and apparently wind up seldom making sense about what I’m trying to say.
But I’m seeing so many freaked out fans right now that I keep finding myself trying to explain why I’m not worried about where this is going (my trepidation about last week’s The Murder in the Middle East before it aired notwithstanding.) But it’s hard to do in 140 characters or less on Twitter, so I’ll give it a go...

BONES 206: The Backbone of the Show

The BONES 200th episode was such a huge milestone and production that it’s no wonder the 206th episode may come and go with a bit less fanfare. But, as fans, we know that the 206th is special—after all, there are 206 bones in the human body! With that in mind, we wanted to do a little something special to mark the occasion.

We found a list of all 206 bones (thank you Wikipedia!) and were surprised to learn that all of the bones can be grouped into five categories: vertebral column, chest, head, arm, and leg. From there, we assigned each category a show representation:...

A Fellow Bones Fan Needs Encouragement!

Hi, everyone! I know you're all here for Bones news, but how about we take a moment to encourage a fellow fan. :)

This is Katy.

She's a fellow fan from Germany. You may also know her as Angelbella27 on Twitter. For the past several weeks, she's been recovering from a traumatic brain injury. She miraculously survived. Many fans were praying for her and sending good vibes her way. She is now recovering in a rehab facility in Austria.

(on Twitter) has been sending me, and others, updates about her health. Katy nearly died several times over the past few weeks.

She feels very down, very sad, as she's adjusting to how her body now functions. I thought that it would be really wonderful if we could all send her our good wishes. It will only take a few minutes to be able to encourage another Bones fan!

If you would like to send Katy a tweet, wishing her well and encouraging her, please tweet   and please @ Angelbella27 as well. Ferrerosa (Anna Rosa) will get that message to her!!! Let's do this!!!

Nothing sparks the fires of romance like crime tape and a pile of bones. Special Agent Seeley Booth and Dr. Temperance "Bones" Brennan may have been busy solving grisly murders on Fox's hit crime show Bones, but fans know that in between analyzing body matter and final resting places, they found each other.

In celebration of our favorite murder-solving pair, we've put together a handy alphabet guide for all things Booth and Brennan...

Tamara Taylor Looking Gorgeous in a Me In My Place Photoshoot PLUS An Interview!

On primetime Tamara Taylor is one of the (too) few ladies that genuinely saturates both smart and sexy, in equal amounts. When she discusses forensic evidence on screen, you get the feeling she already knew the term (and meaning) in real life. Let’s not mince words, she’s smoking hot too. The face and figure she effortlessly has now, most would be happy to have had in their 20s! I mimic Dr Camille Saroyan’s hairdos and envy her dresses, that although rather impractical for a messy forensic lab, are divine none the less.
Tamara has a darkly amusing humor and slightly dirty giggle. It’s been a while since I laughed out loud during an interviewee’s answers. We talked Bones’ corpse gravy, squirrel onesies, her teen mohawk days and what ‘subtly sexy’ means to her. We also play a fun ‘fan’ game, of marry, sleep with or date? So which co-star gets to be the lucky groom, Sweets, Booth, or Arastoo?
Q&A
What would people shocked to know about you?
I’m a midnight marauder. If any sugary sweets are in the house, I will find them for a snack attack...

Buzzfeed: 17 “Bones” Conspiracy Theories, Ranked By Quality

Dr. Jack Hodgins (TJ Thyne) is famously paranoid and leery of institutions.* Throughout Bones’ nine-season run, he’s let us in on many of his wilder conspiracy theories. Those theories are presented here, in order of quality.
*It is unclear how Hodgins reconciles his distrust of the establishment with his position at the government-funded Jeffersonian Institute...
