'Bones' Showrunners Talk Endgames, Fatigue, Spinoffs and a Potential 'Reinvention'

Bones hits episode No. 183 this Monday. And the veteran procedural, already renewed for a tenth season, approaches the end of this run in a similar scenario as last year: looking at what might be the series' final season.
Fox's oldest drama, and one of its steadiest ratings performers despite frequent time slot moves, Bones won't be something the network lets go of easily. Entertainment chief Kevin Reilly has called a 2014 conclusion "likely," but executive producers and showrunners Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan say that conversation is still a ways off. What they do seem sure of is that their intended ending for the series will likely come at the end of year 10 -- be it a season or series finale.

The duo recently chatted with The Hollywood Reporter about their evolving relationship with broadcast television, Hanson's work on new series Backstrom, what sort of circumstances they'd need to attempt to launch another spinoff and their constant internal struggles over when they should call it a day...

‘Bones’ producers look toward the finish line

Hart Hanson knows exactly how Bones will end.
The Canadian creator and executive producer of Fox’s veteran darkly comic forensic drama says its part of his creative process to picture the series finale at the same time he’s working on a show’s first episodes. Why bring this up in the first place? Because Hanson says he envisions that finale at the end of Season 10.
As in next season...

FOX INSIDER: ‘BONES’ RENEWAL MAKES THE SHOW A PERFECT 10 FOR FANS

"There’s been speculation that the 10th season of “Bones” may be its last, but Nathan says you shouldn’t believe the rumors.  As long as there’s a strong demand for more Booth and Brennan, he thinks the show will go on."

Keck's Exclusives: Plans for Bones' Final Season

Fox's Bones was just renewed for its 10th — and possibly final — season, and executive producer Hart Hanson already knows how he wants to wrap up the forensics drama. (He's had a plan since Season 4, he says, though he admits, "I haven't told anyone.") Leading up to the finale, Hanson is conceptualizing...

BONES Renewed for 10th Season! It's Official!

Press Release:

FOX has picked up a 10th season of BONES, it was announced today by Kevin Reilly, Chairman of Entertainment, Fox Broadcasting Company. In addition, after airing a new installment this Friday, Jan. 31 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT), BONES will return to Mondays, with all-new cases, beginning March 10 (8:00-9:00 PM ET/PT).

“Over the course of nine seasons, BONES has grown from a hit crime procedural into a beloved pillar of our lineup that resonates with fans in a way that only the best of shows can,” said Reilly. “Our viewers have embraced Emily, David and the entire cast and characters of BONES as their very own, and I think they are going to love what Hart Hanson and Stephen Nathan have planned for Season 10!”

The fan-favorite series, starring Emily Deschanel as forensic anthropologist TEMPERANCE BRENNAN and David Boreanaz as FBI Special Agent SEELEY BOOTH, will reach its milestone 200th episode during the upcoming 2014-15 season...

BONES: Hart Hanson, Stephen Nathan, and Tamara Taylor Weigh in On Season 10 Possibly Being the End of the Show

BONES hasn’t officially been renewed for season 10 (yet), but Fox boss Kevin Reilly told reporters that he anticipated next year would be the last one for the long-running series. And while fans may already be lamenting the show’s eventual end of the series, it’s bittersweet — and possibly a premature move — for the people involved with the show.

“It’s sort of strange!” BONES star Tamara Taylor (Cam) told me. “I’m okay with that, but it’s weird to hear it. You know something is going to come to an end, but when you actually hear those words, it’s a bit sobering.”...

TV Friday: Bones will likely end after next year, says Fox boss (with video)

It’s unlikely Bones fans found anything humerus about Kevin Reilly’s comments earlier this week. Speaking at the Television Critics Association press tour, the Fox Entertainment chief said the show will probably be laid to rest after next season.
“We’re negotiating on Bones for another season; I anticipate it will be back,” Reilly said. He later told reporters, “I would anticipate it would be the final season.”...

What can the cast tease about Bones‘ ongoing Ghost Killer arc? –Rachel
Cast shmast. EP Hart Hanson tells me, “The Ghost Killer plays heavily through the end of this season. But does this killer exist, or is it the one last paranoia that Pelant left behind? That is the question. And is that the world’s best camouflage, that this person might not exist?”
Do you have anything new on Bones‘ Dr. Sweets? –Ed
In a manner of speaking, yes. Just hear Hart Hanson out. “When we get an official pick-up [for Season 10], we’re going to know one way to go [storyline-wise]. And if we don’t get a pick-up and it’s the last season — which I don’t think will happen, but you have to ready for anything — we have another way to go. That’s not necessarily applying to Sweets, but anyone‘s future could be in flux.”

Five things we want from the final season of 'Bones'

5. Bring back Zach! (And other characters): When the season 3 finale revealed Dr. Zach Addy (Eric Millegan) as Gormogon’s apprentice, it disappointed many fans. It’s time the writers brought him back (although he has since appeared in three episodes) and set it right. In season 4, we learn Zach didn’t actually kill the lobbyist — the crime for which he’s been committed to a mental asylum. They could easily let him out now.
While we’re at it, we’d love to see Brennan’s father Max (Ryan O’Neal) and brother Russ (Loren Dean) in season 10. Plus, what happened to Dr. Goodman (Jonathan Adams)? He went on a “sabbatical” and was never heard from again. A little closure for the director of the Jeffersonian would be nice.

Question: I’ll take anything on Bones‘ upcoming episodes. —Cassidy
Ausiello: If it turns out that this is the show’s final season, series creator Hart Hanson would ideally like to craft a four- to six-episode farewell arc. But that would require Fox giving them ample notice that the end was, in fact, near. “We would like to know tomorrow,” Hanson concedes. “We can pivot fairly quickly if need be, but it would be more satisfying if we were able to do a run of episodes to finish off the series.”
