Post Mortem: Bones Boss Talks Missing Funeral Guests, the 'Furious' Booth-Brennan Fight, Sweets' Twin and More

R.I.P. Sweets.

On Thursday’s Bones, Booth, Brennan & Co. paid tribute to John Francis Daley’s fallen shrink with an appropriately no-frills memorial service held on a hilltop overlooking Washington, D.C. (Admit it, you cried during Brennan’s speech. We’re not here to judge you.)

The episode also (mostly) resolved the complex conspiracy that led to Sweets’ untimely death, included a ferocious, impeccably acted Booth-Brennan fight scene, and brought Sweets’ quasi-successor (and eerie doppelgänger) Aubrey into the forefront.

Below, exec producer Stephen Nathan answers our myriad burning questions about the emotional hour. Included among our queries: Why was Sweets’ service so poorly attended, and why wasn’t widow Daisy more of a wreck?...

John Francis Daley Opens Up About Sweets' Shocking Bones Exit: 'I Feel Like I Lost a Part of Me'

Bones pays its final respects to Dr. Lance Sweets in tonight’s episode (8/7c on Fox), and it seems likely that John Francis Daley will be among the millions of fans watching the character’s emotional farewell.
“I had a strong bond with Sweeets,” Daley tells TVLine one week after his alter ego’s onscreen death. “I really did feel like I was losing a part of me. I had so much compassion for him. He was such a good person… He had gone through so much, and to see him die in such a grim way was shocking.”
As TVLine reported, Daley’s burgeoning directing career — he’s currently helming a remake of National Lampoon’s Vacationled The Powers That Be at Bones to kill off Sweets. What did he think of that decision? The actor-auteur tackles that question in the following Q&A. He also opens up about his less-than-ideal last day of shooting, shares his thoughts on Sweets’ final baby wish and offers a critique of his sorta-replacement, Aubrey...

7 Reasons Why Sweets was Good for 'Bones' (and Why We'll Miss Him)

Since Bones saw the demise of Dr. Lance Sweets in its season 10 premiere, we felt the need to hold our own little love fest in remembrance of all the good stuff that only his character could have (and did) provide for the Bones universe. Without Sweets, where would Brennan and Booth be today? I don't even want to think about it.

The character of wunderkind FBI psychologist and profiler Dr. Lance Sweets inspired a great deal of humor, informed compassion, and emotional/psychological clarity in the Brennan-Booth relationship before his life ended, but his presence on Bones was a subject for great debate among those who follow the show religiously. Why? Because Sweets took precious screen time from the dynamic duo, especially in the later seasons as he began to train under Booth as a field agent. Bones is at its best when Brennan and Booth share the screen. The equation is simple: Booth + Brennan = Solid Gold -- so don't mess with it, right? Wrong. And was the sacrifice worth it? Indubitably. I present to you: seven reasons why Sweets was good for FOX's Bones and why we're going to miss the heck out of that guy...

The expression ‘May you live in interesting times’ could certainly be applied to Bones recently.

BONES: Carla Gallo on Daisy’s Grief, Filming ‘The Conspiracy in the Corpse,’ and More

The BONES characters were thrown for a loop when Sweets was killed in the season 10 premiere, but no one was more devastated than squintern, Daisy, Sweets’ off-on love — and the mother of his unborn son.

I spoke with BONES’ Carla Gallo (Daisy) about her off and on-screen devastation about Sweets’ death, filming “The Conspiracy in the Corpse,” and more…

How did they pitch you what Daisy would be going through this season?
Carla Gallo: I have a feeling I pitched them a little bit! I don’t think [Daisy's pregnancy] was necessarily in the cards; I think they had called to get me for the first episode, and my manager was like, well, she’s humongously pregnant. And they were like, we’ll call you back. And they said, yep, we’ll work it in. Which was pretty unbelievable. Most actors don’t have the luxury of having a job that will do that for them? ...

Exclusive Bones First Look: Sweets' Death Leads Booth to a "Destructive Place"

Are you still reeling from the surprise death of Lance Sweets in Bones' Season 10 premiere? So are the show's characters.
On Thursday's episode (8/7c, Fox), Booth (David Borenanaz), Brennan (Emily Deschanel) and the rest of the Jeffersonian team work diligently to find clues to both find out who murdered Sweets (John Francis Daley) and solve the larger FBI conspiracy. Needless to say, emotions are running high.

Shocker: Show boss breaks down the "devastating" season opener

So high, in fact, that Booth, in his grief and guilt, will go to a "very destructive place," Boreanaz says in the exclusive sneak peek below. Perhaps even more alarming is the huge confrontation Booth's behavior causes between him and Brennan.
"Who you are now — your'e not someone I want in my life," Brennan says.
That doesn't sound good. For even more from Thursday's episode, which also features the team laying Sweets to rest during an emotional (if nontraditional) funeral, click play below...

Mega Buzz: September 20

I can't believe Bones killed Sweets! What can you tell me about the funeral? — HeatherAs executive producer Stephen Nathan promised, it's certainly nontraditional. But it's right in its own way. Look for a particularly moving eulogy from Brennan that sums up the impact Sweets had on her life (including her marriage to Booth). And even though you should keep the tissues handy, Booth's contribution to the ceremony should be good for at least one smile.

Ask Ausiello: September 20

Question: I’m still devastated about Sweets’ death and would absolutely love some happy Bones scoop you have. —Amelia
Ausiello: Wendell isn’t going to die! As EP Stephen Nathan strongly hinted in last week’s premiere post mortem, it’s highly unlikely the show will kill off two major characters in one season. (The title of the show is Bones, not Game of Thrones.) That said, Nathan confirms that Wendell’s cancer battle will “definitely be revisited” this season. “We’ve already done the first episode dealing with that,” he notes, “and that will continue for a few more episodes.”
Question: Bones! What’s upcoming for Booth and Brennan outside of the conspiracy arc? —Kay
Ausiello: The big 200th episode — and here’s another clue about the premise of the milestone outing per Mr. Nathan: “They’re all going to be playing their characters, but in a different world and situation.” And he goes on to reiterate that this is not an “alternate reality” situation.

3 Big Reasons We'll Miss The Bones Character We Just Lost

For most of TV history, killing off a main character has been a rarity. Recently however, killing off lead characters has become more of a TV staple, as leads end up dying off for shock effect or simply because the actor or actress in question is leaving a show (Thanks Game of Thrones). This week, Bones premiered the first episode of its 10th season, opening up with Booth in jail and a plotline carrying over from Season 9. Unfortunately, instead of ending on a happy note for Booth and Brennan, Bones’ premiere episode was tinged with sadness. At the end of the episode, fans were treated to the death of Dr. Lance Sweets...

Bones Round Table: Season Premiere Shocker

It happened: Bones Season 10 Episode 1 left us with a death that no one saw coming.

Even when David Boreanaz and Emily Deschanel offered some insight into the upcoming season, nothing could have prepared us for the premiere. Based on the way Bones Season 9 ended, we knew this was going to be an important episode, but it looks like the opener will set the (depressing?) tone for the whole season.

Below, TV Fanatic writers Mary Kate Venedam, Christine Orlando, Michelle Carlbert, and Ashley Bissette Sumerel discuss their thoughts on the shocking events that just transpired...

Mashable; The Story Behind That Shocking 'Bones' Season Premiere

Following the incarceration of Seeley Booth at the end of Season 9, fans knew that Bones would have to put a lot of pieces back together at the start of the new season.
Booth and Bones needed a new home after theirs was riddled with bullets, Booth would be dealing with trauma after being targeted in jail, and the team would have to band together to bring down the people behind the conspiracy that's caused all of their problems....

'Bones' Season 10, episode 2 will be even sadder than the premiere, EP warns

Don't put away the tissues just yet, "Bones" fans. While the Season 10 premiere's shocking death might've left you in tears, it's episode 2 that's going to pack the real emotional punch.

John Francis Daley's Dr. Lance Sweets was shot to death in the first episode back, setting off the story arc for Season 10.

"Losing John was a tremendous, tremendous loss for all of us, and John being a member of the family I know how difficult it was for him," executive producer Stephen Nathan tells Zap2it. "Cutting this episode, I would tear up every time we got to this scene just knowing what was going on. It was so emotionally overwhelming for all of us."...
